What type of gas?

Just got an 09 Fit Sport. What grade of gas should I be using? I heard a rumor that premium will have no effect, since the engine is now built for it. Thanks

Pretty much. Unless your engine has been specifically designed for premium fuel, you find any measurable improvement by using it.

Have you read the manual?

Stick with tier one gasoline and you will be fine.

I use Sunnoco Ultra 94 and Shell V-Power. I know it's overkill, but hey, it's just $5 more.

Do you mean "top tier"? They have a website. What's weird is the domain name is registered to a company at the same address as one of the "top tier" gasoline marketers, quick trip.

It smacks of bias and marketing. The top tier website is not transparent; that is they make no mention of who they are. Quick trip, Shell, and Chevron make strange bedfellows.

The only radio ads for "top tier" I can recall were for Quick Trip (a privately held company).

My BS meter is quivering. Being privately held, their books aren't open to scrutiny and their relationships are tightly held.

That said I buy gas at Shell. I like their nice clean shiny stations (at least around here) and have visions of wholesome scrubbed Dutch girls every time I go to one of their retail outlets.

edit: actually the current owner of Top Tier's domain is GM. Beats me.

I've been using QuikTrip 87 for years without any problems.

Top Tier is owned by GM (Honda too) as well as BMW, Toyota, Volkswagen, and Audi.

TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline is the premier standard for gasoline performance. Six of the world's top automakers, BMW, General Motors, Honda, Toyota, Volkswagen and Audi recognize that the current EPA minimum detergent requirements do not go far enough to ensure optimal engine performance.
Since the minimum additive performance standards were first established by EPA in 1995, most gasoline marketers have actually reduced the concentration level of detergent additive in their gasoline by up to 50%. As a result, the ability of a vehicle to maintain stringent Tier 2 emission standards have been hampered, leading to engine deposits which can have a big impact on in-use emissions and driver satisfaction.
These automakers have raised the bar. TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline help drivers avoid lower quality gasoline which can leave deposits on critical engine parts, which reduces engine performance. That's something both drivers and automakers want to avoid.

yeah yeah, I read the propaganda (where do you see they are owned by anyone?).

The website domain was originally owned by quicktrip as noted on independent services (notice they are strategically listed first?) and makes no mention of who owns them now on the site. Currently the domain is registered to GM.

It's very troubling. With something like this you want independent labs and verifiable results backing them up. I smell a marketing scam.

Well, DON'T BUY THEIR GAS, it's just that simple.

I put in premium but only because it's an extra 2 dollars a fill up. There have been rumors that people with scan gauages have noticed a change in the engine timing when using premium fuel. I cannot verify if this is true.

Use whatever you've got. 87 octane is fine. 89 and 93 work too. any performance difference? nobody knows. I've even used 25:1 premix in a pinch with no ill side effects.

As premium fuel takes longer to burn, timing should be advanced to allow it to burn completely, otherwise it would be less efficient. Other all we have is anecdotal evidence, although mahout made a pretty strong statement here against the timing advancing due to premium fuels.

My GD3 runs much better on regular. I did premium once and the car just did not run as smooth and felt like it was running rough.

Steve... if this keeps going you should consider charging fees!

Either that or just post RTFM. The former is much more polite and to the point. I suppose I could suggest people use search.

LOL. I marvel at the number of people who think they're smarter than the recommendations made by the manufacturer.

QuickTrip is the only gasoline retailer that I can recall who says, if your car doesn't need premium, don't buy it. That said, I would take with a grain of salt the implication that BP and Exxon/Mobil aren't top tier gasolines because they aren't part of the club.
