Paddle Shifters
Paddle Shifters
does anyone know how they work? do they communicate with the PCM to tell it to shift the transmission?
could you add a paddle wheel onto a standard fit automatic and get it to work with some wiring?
thanks!

i think almost everyone on here would agree on getting a sport
over a base. The difference in price is minimal. those people who
got the base just wanted to save money and i don't blame them
for that. but then after the fact they want to make there base
like a sport and wind up spending the money anyway.
Just sad to see

I believe you need a whole new gear selector as well to add the manual mode (It's called S - sport - mode I believe). To use the paddles, you have to kick the gear selector down to S and there is no P/R/N/D/3/2/1 like in the base model, Just P/R/N/D/S. 3,2,&1 are controlled by the paddles.

pretty much any decent aftermarket in-dash navi unit would far surpass the capabilities of the stock navi.
Sorry to get off the subject of paddles, but this would be a much more logical and beneficial upgrade than paddles. I have the paddles and although nice, I would NEVER tell anyone they must have them or they're missing out- nor do I even know if it's possible to do so.

Learned something new today. Now I have questions about this... if the paddles work in D also, what is the use for S mode? Does D hold gear for a shorter period of time then automatically shift for you?Much appreciated.

In "D" gear doesn't stay as u want. For example, I'm dead stop on traffic light with D mode, pressing + paddle will change to 2nd gear and it takes off from 2nd gear instead of 1st. But as soon as I hit around 30 mph (in my case) it automaticly changes gear to the 3rd one and then so for. If I'm doing the same with "S" mode then it just stays in 2nd gear forever. (I don't know about forever, but it scared the shit out of me when it didn't change gear automaticlly after 7500 rpm... so i'm assuming that it doesn't cut off fuel or change gear like cars with tiotronic tranny i've had b4) The good thing about using paddle on "D" mode is that it's very useful when u trying to go up a pretty high hills. I just press - paddle twice and the car moves up pretty quickly and then it changes gear later by itself.
Oh and forgot to add this. If u change from "D" to "S" while u r on 5th then the gear goes from 5th to 3rd until u press + paddle. Pretty useful when I'm on highway driving around 70mph and wanna pass someone
I have a similar problem/question. I have a base I bought in late 13 (14 year) I have moved & now drive up & down a mountain. I would just like to be able to pick 4th gear, 5th is to high & 3 too low. does anyone know of a way I could do this? just a O/D on/off button to keep it out of 5th would do...
Thanks,
Jack

We do not get paddles here in Canada . I quite often will just leave it in 3rd around town. Also up to around 60mph or so I have no problem down shifting from D to 3. I do this often leaving an expressway for off ramp fun.
It'd take some hacking, you'd probably want to reference a Sport model's ECU to see how it goes about all of the special cases and things that could really mess up the car. You'd need a few things on top of the hack job, a way to move out of D and into you're own "S" mode, then you'd need the paddles. Maybe you could punch out one of the buttons that's next to the stability control (or if the bases don't have stability control, there's still that panel of three buttons to the left of the steering wheel sort of by your knees...) and put in a button that switches over the transmission from D to S, but you then run into a problem if you don't program it properly, it might skip gears, not shift ...blah blah blah.
if you know what you're doing, it might be worth it, but it'd really suck to mess up the car over paddle shifters.

Nice when you get the revs just right. Almost like downshifting a std. I find that third gear responsive enough yet avoid attracting too many law enforcement officers.

you can probably get some paddles to work but likely a new ecm is needed to handle inputs.
