The Fit has a good bit less maximum cargo volume than my last car, (about 85% of the volume behind the rear seats, and about 75% of the volume available with the rear seats folded)... However, the Fit is about 9 inches shorter in length, 5 inches narrower, and 10 inches shorter in height (Element).
You expect a giant box to have WAY more space! The difference is far less than one would expect, which in my book is a definite win for the Fit.
On the downside, the Fit isn't quite as versatile for carrying cargo - the flooring isn't as durable, with its almost cardboard-like panel over the spare, budget grade carpeting, and narrow doorways. The Element's tailgate could hold 400 lbs - I've driven with a full-size fridge sticking out the back, couches... I got bunk-beds in it with the rear door completely closed (sans mattresses).
The Fit, however, does most of the what the Element could, most of the time, and gets 50% better fuel economy! Not to mention being more comfortable and more fun!!!

Aside from the Compass, which is actually a Caliber, I can't think of any SUV's with less space. And the short wb Wrangler. (of course, past models... The old RAVs and Samurais... No doubt!)
but the look on someone's face when you open the back with the seats down? Pure shock and awe!
