What is this mysterious 'subfuel' tank?

From the ESM:

Subfuel Supply System
The subfuel supply system consists of the subfuel pump, the subfuel tank, the subfuel pipe, the subfuel solenoid, the subfuel pipe, the fuel nozzle, the EVAP two way valve, the EVAP canister, and the ECM/PCM.
When engine start in cold temperature, the subfuel solenoid supplies fuel to the intake manifold. When the ignition switch is ON (II), the subfuel pump is ON, to prevent from fuel sticking and contaminating.

Que?

Since I have no idea what purpose it serves from that desription (additional fuel pressure for cold starts?) I can just remove all the components right?

Or maybe that's where the nitromethane goes?

It's for when you're operating under a lake...

Here is a seemingly-relevant patent (from Honda engineers no less):

Abstract
A fuel supply system for a general purpose internal combustion engine is equipped with a sub-fuel tank that retains gasoline fuel supplied from a main fuel tank and houses the high-pressure pump in its interior. In other words, the pump is immersed in the gasoline fuel retained in the tank, so that if an air pocket should occur in the fuel supply pipe between the main fuel tank and pump, the air will be discharged from the sub-fuel tank to the exterior through a fuel return pipe etc., thereby ensuring that the pump does not suck in air. Since fuel injectors can therefore inject gasoline fuel immediately, starting performance is enhanced.

I wonder how much the pump and lines and evac canister and solenoids all weigh?

LOL...hardcore weight reduction. Just swap everything for a lightweight, plastic race tank...mold it to fill the well where the spare tire and jack normally goes to redistribute the weight.

Hmm isn't the fuel tank already made out of plastic? On the GDs I distinctly remember it was plastic, not so sure about the GEs.

Or maybe it wasn't such a particularly lightweight kind of plastic.
