Car is BROKEN

Came back from a long road trip today, just inside the city my poor car made an awful grinding sound then went dead. Engine turned over but would not start, did not sound right at all. Console lights starting blinking erratically, and some weird beeping too. I think my poor fit is done.

Care to elaborate in greater detail on what was going on prior to the break down? Like any specific noises coming from a certain area, fluid levels, etc.

First major GE problem I've seen show up on this board. I don't know - might have been a few lemons out there, but so far, complaints about the reliability are almost zero. Of course, fluid levels and all that would be interesting to know more about. Hopefully you will get more info from the mechanic. Sorry to hear!

The blinking erratically and weird beeping sounds like the battery is dead to me...since I've had that happen. But you say that the engine turned over? .....go to the dealership and let us know what happened!

It's at the dealer now, they are trying to get a look at it today although they are busy. Oil was just changed and fluid levels were all OK. I could not see any visible signs of damage under the hood, or any fluids coming out from underneath. The grinding only lasted a second, I'm not sure where it was coming from. Will post when I find out more.

how many miles on your car? Could it possibly be a bad fuel injector?

If the results of the compression test were bad then the injectors are the least of the problem, although possibly related.

What did the dealer say about your vehicle? Hopefully they have had time to look and resolve the issue.

sorry if I haven't responded fast enough to suit your needs but I work full time and have two kids so my time is very limited! with that said the car has 118000 km and the compression test's results were: 200lbs cylinder 1-150lbs cylinder 2-180lbs cylinder 3-200lbs cylinder 4... when i ran a diagnostic it read misfire cylinder 2 and 4 so I switched the #4 coil with the #1 and took a drive re-ran the diagnostic and it read misfire cylinder 4 which is strange cuz there is obviously a problem with cylinder 2... so at this point i'm going to inspect the wiring and my mechanic is going to do a wet test see what happens

Well that is certainly a reasonable reaction to a comment made in jest.

Good Luck.

Sorry for the delay, I have been dealing with a lady at the service desk and it has been difficult to get details.

So far it sounds like a broken valve spring, but I can't be 100% certain of that. Apparently they have ordered a new "block" and are working on it now. I can't give any more details, but when I get the full report I will let you all know.

For the record I drive my car hard but not stupid, regular oil changes with synthetic and no intentional red lining. I was not doing anything out of the ordinary at the time of failure. Engine had approximately 97,000km on it.

Doesn't the engine have a 5 year, 60,000 mile warranty?
