Honda (OEM) Security System

So, having read from this forum a lot now, thought I should join (and start off with a question).

Does anyone know how hard it is to install the referenced security system on the base Fit or how much the dealer might charge to install it?

Wife would really like it over the manual entry, etc.

Anyone ever done either of those methods?

Have not done myself; however, had dealer install keyless and security system on my 2010 base and the charge was around $400 I believe. Did not take them long time and it works as advertised. Good luck

Thanks for the reply and info.

I'll be out today...might stop by and ask them.

(would be nice to hear from someone who did it themselves... )

FWIW, here is the install guide for the security system. It looks pretty straightforward. If you want the keyless entry however, that has to be done at the dealer because they have to cut and program the key (cost me ~$100 when I got a new key for my accord).

In short, all you have to do is buy the replacement key for the Sport. Here or here. (compare S&H)

You can then:

a) set up the fob and have a dealer cut and program the key. the fob and key are two separate things in one.

b) set up the fob and chop off the key blade. and now you really have two separate things.

Wow ! Thanks for the replys !

Well, with only the Honda site to go from, I didn't know the keyless entry was a separate (or combined) option. So, I also learned what I was just told above , they need to "do" the keys.

The keyless entry system (part + install) is $208. Considering dealership prices, not bad at all. The part (I ordered it) was $160, so the install is less than $50.

I'll decide (with the wife--it's her car) about the security portion of it later. Parts and price for it installed is $374.

So, I'll sneak the car over there tomorrow and a certain someone will have a surprise on Christmas (I'll let her use the old manual keys till then )

Thanks for the help (and instructions) !

huh? what part did you buy?

If I wasn't clear, the Base already has a keyless entry system (the keyless module is in the key cylinder), you just need the key. And the replacement key for the Sport is all you need, it costs $40-60 (depending on who you get it from). the only additional cost would be to program and cut the key itself.

Yikes ! You saying I got taken to the cleaners? I bought the keyless entry system (part). And it's $48 to install. I'm so confused.

Uh, pretty much.

https://www.fitfreak.net/forums/2nd-...tml#post607207 <-- that's a specific post in the thread

But... if you think about it... it cost me almost $200 when I got a spare key for the Nissan (just key, cut and programmed, no extra unit). So, the cost you are paying could almost be justified.

Well, having paid for it and scheduled everything, I guess I'm stuck. I could cancel the install ($48) but like you said, might as well get the key cut and be done with it. However, if we ever get a second key, I think we'll get the replacement key and just make a fob out of it.

Thanks much for the info!

I'm not very good at "confrontation"... maybe you can "raise a ruckus" (ask them just what you are getting, reference this info if you think they'll listen) and get them to cancel it and just get the key.

Yeah, I guess we can keep the "stealerships" on the bogus list if they sell a replacement key for around $40 and yet sell the "keyless entry system" (which, I gather, isn't much more than a key itself) for $160.

Well, called and managed to get a verbal "it's OK to change the existing order for a replacement key instead" agreement. Key with tax is $52. And then the labor to cut it and HDS (?) it.

Of course, the parts guy is all "I can't promise this will work so if it doesn't, we're not liable"...

Hope that video is right !

My Honda dealer installs the Karr Alarm on every car in the lot. The salesman told me that they do it to prevent car thefts at the lot. IF you want to buy the alarm that is great, it is already there. IF you do not want to buy it, they take some key out of it.

I was looking around to see what was missing, but have not figured it out yet. Any guesses anyone?

So, here's today's story...

After the discussion about it NOT being the same key and it MIGHT not work, I returned the keyless entry system part and agreed to buy the $52 Sport replacement key PLUS the $90 labor few. As it was explained to me, the $48 install fee was a special price (associated with an accessory) that couldn't be carried over to just a regular "part" (the replacement key). THAT part was subject to regular labor prices. So, the total price without taxes was about $142. Then the guy informed me doing a second key at the same time wouldn't add anything to the labor cost--did I want to go ahead and get a second one? So, I accepted that and the final price after taxes was about $208.

So, now I have FOUR working keys--two of them with buttons.

Oh, and one guy told me without the security system hooked in, it wouldn't give an audible when it locked. He said she'd (it's my wife's car) have to listen for the mechanical movement of the locks being locked. But, he was wrong there, too. The lights flicker when it goes lock/unlock AND the horn beeps if you press it a second time.

Thanks for the help !

Good to hear that the new alarm system has been arranged. Since you'll be at the dealership, you may like to find out the cost to install an impact sensor if your system does not come with one. I just read another thread in this forum that thieves smashed FIT windows and grap without opening the door (FIT has big side windows to slide in) and the alarm never went off. One of our FIT member had all their FIT tires and rims dismantled and stolen.

I had to pay through my nose - $250 extra for my dealer to install a impact sensor alarm to augment the on-board OEM alarm for my 2010 Sports A/T FIT. That way, the alarm will go off is someone is trying to smash the window, steal my rims/tires or vandalize my FIT.

I am not sure if my $250 is money well spent at this point.

It's one of those "things" you might never know about...

Well, to explain, for example, if I go to a public place, I try to park away from other parkers (to protect from dings) and if it's at night, under a light. Now, my (ex) wife complained it was a waste of time because no one had ever tried to steal our car...to which I replied, "Perhaps it's because of where I've been parking and had I chosed a more dense place with less light...you wouldn't be saying that now..."

So, you don't know if precautions are doing any good or not. Like the warning sign in our front yard. Does it do any good? No one has ever tried to break in. Does that mean several potential criminals saw it and moved to somenoe else? Dunno...

BUT, so we aren't confused, all I had done was keyless entry. NOT that AND the alarm system. So, I have no alarm system of any kind.

Thanks for your clarification Slynky. Sorry, I've made the wrong assumption.. please ignore my previous alarm suggestions which will not apply to you
