Tunnel carpet, gas pedal, salt, wear, floor mats, winter, shoes, etc.

Been issues for quite a while. Need to go with it and minimize the problem.
After I sit down in the seat I always clomp my shoes together outside the car - before I swing them in, rain or shine or snow or mud.

Next I position my right foot on the gas pedal - then maintain it. Usually the floor under your heal goes. Shift position slightly every now and then. Minimize wear and good exercise.

** Get seat in the right position. Legs v. Arms v. Back

** In qualified driving 'control' is of the issue. The right foot floats of the accelerator. Should not be hanging off on the carpet.

Keep off it. Use your gut...

A steel scuff guard adjacent to accelerator is good to have. Do not rely on it.

** Keep weight off heal [minimize] and on to the ball of your foot....

Dance

*********

Keep the 'Pedal Well' clean. Prevent/Minimize road crap from getting there. Keep it clean...

It just doesnt feel right to me if my foot is on the pedal at a 90 degree angle, but like i said i drive barefoot when it isnt cold or raining so carpet rubbing isnt an issue.

Hi guys,

If you haven't done so before please fill out this request to add the Honda Fit to ACC's after-market carpet options.

Auto Custom Carpets, Inc - New Product Request

Even if you don't need it now it will be nice to have an option for better aftermarket carpeting in the future as ours begin to wear out. The more people request it the higher the probability they will make the molds for our Fits.

I agree- you could have received a faulty set. Any product that is not working after only a month of use needs to be returned to wherever you bought it.
I have had my oem all weather mats for 7 mos & almost 10,000 miles and no problem except dirt & sand which is easily washed off. I could understand if you had the carpet mats, but the oem rubber are decent.

....Done. A real windfall to the first company that comes up with custom molded, quality carpet for the FIT.

Yeah my 2010 carpet wore through in 2MONTH'S!!!!IN 3 PLACE'S!!!!I had the OEM all weather mat's and they did not help at all.I bought the digital weathertech mat's and they cover up MOST of the wear through.I'm so mad about the carpet I would have gotten a new car if not for weathertech(I'm Pretty Anal).I've owned 8 Honda's in the past,NOT 1 have worn through at all.The only draw back I've found with the mat's is the upper lip is pretty sharp and when I removed the liner's to clean(driver side)it left a very thin line in the carpet.Imagine the carpet as dough and the liners as cookie cutter's.Just my experience.

The carpet is definitely cheap. However, I use the all-weather rubber floormats and have no problems. Size 11 shoe. I'm really particular about my cars, so I just make sure I keep my feet on the mats and I vacuum often. At least my 2010 has a dead pedal. My '08 didn't even have that.

So, I have an 07' with 108K miles, only one spot is wearing small on drivers side in the carpet (or should I say felt), however the rest of the carpet looks like hell. I am anal about cleaning the interior, vacuuming, shampooing, even went as far as adding 3m carpet protector...nothing, it still looks horrible, and any dirt gets stuck and is ridiculously hard to get out.
So, I started pulling it up and realized it may be not so hard to replace. I have looked online for weeks and no molded cut premium carpet is available.
Therefore, I found an outdoor black carpet at Home Depot --> Shaw Outdoor Galaxy Greystone 6 ft. Width x Your choice length Carpet (sold by the linear foot) - 785HD85500 at The Home Depot that looks pretty good and is easy to mold and better quality than original. This weekend I am going to take the old out, trim and cut, throw on some velcro and have a new carpet.....I know it is a risk but it cannot be any worse.

Jeremy,

Good luck man, let us know how it goes. I think its gonna be very difficult to get un-molded carpet to fit correctly. Ive taken my carpet out before to install sound deadening and even getting foam to mold somewhat was extremely difficult. It would be nice if there was a product that would mold when heat was applied, but I havnt found anything like that.

Carpet mats

I learned my lesson on a 2007 Fit Sport I had. I now have a 2010 Fit Sport. In the old one I had carpet mats and was starting to burn through it. In the new one I got the all-season ones and have no problem with them.

worn carpet for me, too!!

It has been almost 11 mos and 11,000 miles on my fit--last week I noted excessive wear in the carpet on the driver side by the side of the tranny hump. I have the all weather mats- which do not cover this area.
Brought it to my dealer and he checked with the service manager. They told me they had not seen this before and will replace the carpet under warranty. I find it hard to believe they have not seen something like this before, but then they only have about 5-6 Fits on the lot at any given time, so it is not a very large dealership. I have a 16 year old Subaru with over 153,000 miles and there is almost no carpet wear!
I know it will wear again.
Would some other brand of mat come up higher and protect this area better?
What about affixing some rubber in this area? -how would you stick it there?
Any recommendations?

That looks like my carpet after a month. I rest my foot on the same spot. OH well. I did the same thing on my Accord, but it took a lot longer. I used the Home Depot stuff, but only cut a patch where the hole was. Coincidentally, it is really close to the same color of the carpet that is installed. The Rubber mat looked too much like crap.
It is going to happen again because, the carpet it cheap the car is inexpensive. To have a inexpensive car, you are going to have cheap stuff.

I had issues with it... but honestly, I couldn't care less about the carpet down there where I can barely see it. I did cut out a bunch of that thick insulation that was behind the carpeting against the transmission tunnel to give me more clearance, and that mostly stopped the wear.

But yeah, so my foot was also at that sideways angle where my toes tended to touch the carpet on the transmission tunnel. The legroom was limited, and the seat support wasn't all that great in the side-bolster/thigh support department, so if I had my foot directly on the pedal correctly, it felt awkward. I usually had my heel in front of the brake. If this doesn't make sense, scoot the seat forward until it's uncomfortable to put your foot on the gas correctly.

I'm not having a problem with carpet wear, but it's interesting to know your dealer will replace it under warranty. I've learned through the years that it's more likely related to right foot position, awkward at first but I'm able to adjust. I have blown out carpets the same way in other cars I've owned. Ever since I've try to avoid it. For me it's always been a winter problem.

When I showed it to my dealer they called it a wear item which they normally cover for one year from date of sale. I was just over that but they agreed to replace it under warranty anyway. They did say they would only do it once no matter whether the second carpet wore in the same place which it started doing before I covered that spot up with a small carpet patch.

Rsteinbr- A small piece of grey colored carpet sounds like a good idea- maybe I could velcro it in place. Less expensive than buying the weathertech digital mats which might help. The material is cheap--and I am sure there is no upgrade for the carpet that the dealer would install for me.

Krimson-- I notice when I drive my Subaru my foot rests at an angle with toes pointing rightward toward the gas pedal and stays on the mat and doesn't touch the tranny hump--
I will fiddle around with another foot position, if there is room on the fit--the gas pedal is quite tiny.
This wear may have begun during the winter when I was wearing boots that are wider than regular shoes.

When I bought the FIT one of the first concerns was the pedal layout. My last two rides were used Cadillacs, autos with lots of room, although heal wear was an issue.

I got the all-weather mats on-line for the FIT and then had to get used to that, like you said, tiny gas pedal. So far I've avoided both heal and tunnel wear. I'm also dilettante when knocking the snow and any crud off my shoes before I swing them into the car. I used to bang 'em on the side panel under the door, but after blowing out a rusty one on my old Audi I stopped that.

It's all about TLC I guess. Some one suggested a thin sheet aluminum shield, but I'm thinking that's a bit overboard but would work. Some place might even sell them.

@KC:

I never noticed the gas pedal being all that small, but then, I've owned a lot of Hondas... they all seemed about the same.

I did notice that there's not much space between the gas pedal and the side. One of the things that kinda sold me on the tC when I sat in it is that the center console/hump area is 'scooped out' to make room for big feet! 2011 Scion tC drivers footwell Photo Car and Driver - (339270)
