Was at the dealership and saw a poster on the wall. Is it ok to use this weight on 2010 and earlier models or was there some engine changes for this year?

 

No engine changes, Honda is transitioning to 0W-20 for most of their vehicles and 0W-20 can be used in pretty much any car specifying 5w-20.

Whats up with Mobil, I seen a new oil Mobil special, That makes 7 lines of oil in the same weights. I like Mobil oils but now need a degree to make sense of it all.

 

Darn... I missed this... my FIT just undergone its first oil change at the dealership (free first service) and they change it to 5W20. If I had known, I will insist at the dealership for 0W20 instead

Does this mean the original oil when the FIT was shipped from Japan was 0W20 and now it had been replaced by 5W20 after first service and that means I will experience 1.5% deterioration of mpg, according the the white paper shared by Krimson_Cardnal?

 

They might of switched to 0w20 already but not required to change till later in the year. All 2011 Honda's require 0w20.

 

I'm not sure how Honda is going to handle this. My dealer service just told me they would change the oil to synthetic, but would not use the new 0W20 on my 2010 that's labeled at using 5W20. Until Honda issues a service bulletin I think dealers will play it by the book in pre-2011 Fit's.

 

I am leaning towards Krimson_Cardnal's point that Honda dealers play by the book and changed my oil to 5W20.

My Honda service receipt dated March 25th shows 5W20 as oil type. It is a free first service

 

I didn't know it was a competition. Ask the dealer for clarification, there is not that much difference between 0w20 to 5w20 and the only reason they are changing is to help meet cafe standards.

 

I just had my 2nd oil change with my Fit. And as always planned, I switched to full synthetic. Despite the knowledge that Honda was/is transitioning most of their vehicles to 0w-20 weight oil, mine being a 2010, I elected to stay with the 5w-20.

As long as I'm still under full warranty, and until Honda officially and openly at all dealerships announces it, I'm going with the old recommendation.

I think- speculate the primary reason Honda wants to transition their vehicles to 0W oil, is for the percentage point improvement in gas mileage. This improves their gas mileage numbers for all of Honda. So I think Honda IS going to do it...

But I'm not convinced that it's really better for the engine. Once Honda establishes that 0W oil is the recommended oil, I'll consider changing, at least to see how it may or maynot affect my mileage and the vehicle. But now? The Honda dealership I took my vehicle to, is still using 5W-20 as the standard for the Honda Fit. I'm went full synthetic, but I'm holding off on going with the lighter weight...for now....

 

That's my feeling too....they say as much in their literature. It will improve gas mileage and "reduce their carbon footprint".
That's all well and good...and eventually...maybe as soon as my next change, I'll probably try 0W-20...but for now? I'm suspicious that a engine that Honda themselves designated as "designed" for 5w-20 is suddenly supposedly best suited for 0w-20, and since with full synthetic I don't perceive that big a difference? I'll stick with the 5w-20 until it's clear and undeniable from Honda.

 

Thats part of the reason for higher oil prices too. There is a shortage due to refinery and application. The 0w20 has always been in short supply and is a synthetic oil will no additives needed to reach the specification for viscosity.

 

There really is no difference in design between an engine designed for 5w-20 and 0w-20 as they're both 20 weight oils at operating temperature, one is just thinner in cold temperatures, and even then, that's still gonna be thicker than the 20 weight. The main benefit in my opinion of 0w-20 is the better winter cold starts.

seeing 0W20 showing up more and more at Wally worlds as I think some Toyota's are specifying that weight now as well.

It's also helpful to have new discussions because sometimes new information becomes available that can actually lead to a valuable discussion. Complaining about seeing more than one oil thread on a car forum does just the opposite.

 

I would like to see more info on Mobil special GF5 to Mobil1 extended synthetic. I counted 7. Special,Super,High mileage,M1 advance,M1,M1 extended, Racing. Honda Maintenance minder goes to 6000 to 12000 miles on a single oil change and with Mobil being Honda factory fill, which one is rated for the MM. Ive read what Mobil has to say but interested in what Honda has to say. I know Honda says synthetic is OK if it has the star-burst API emblem on the back and GF4-5 with the proper weight.
