I am driving a bit conservatively but so far, according to my meter I am getting 39.6mpg on my fit's second tank (~650 miles on the car).

The dealership topped up the tank for me when I bought it, calculated on the first tank was 37.8mpg. But I drive light traffic roads at almost a constant 55 with no trips shorter than 4 miles.

While we’re on the topic of mileage, of all the cars I’ve ever driven my ‘09 Fit Sport MT has the least variation between city mpg and highway mpg. I think that this is because the Fit is very light and I drive carefully in the city (not racing to red lights, etc.) and because it’s not a very aerodynamic car (an engineering trade-off so that it can hold a lot a stuff, especially tall stuff). The city mpg always amazes me, but the highway mpg, especially with a headwind or if I’m keeping it up at around 80mph, generally disappoints me.

That said, and for the information of the OP, in the warm weather I typically get mileage in the low 30s in the city and in the high 30s on the highway. The only time I’ve been down in the 20s is in the dead of winter with a lot of stop-and-go traffic, idling the car while I dig it out of snowbanks, etc.

My average speed is right above 40 for the vehicle and most of my commute is around 50mph with a few 25mph towns and a few stop signs. i'm averaging right now above 40mpg and am very happy.

when I take it out on the highway, if I keep it around 65mph, I'll stay around 39mpg but any higher and economy suffers. I had the roof rack with cargo box up top my wife & son in the car and wanted to get home so 75-80mph was the name of the game from Northern Jersey all the way to VT. got 29mpg on that jaunt with 32 on the whole trip. Higher speeds and economy don't mix with the FIT. Moderate speed on country roads is really where it is at.

I've wanted to start my own topic regarding the fit and its "decent, but not amazing" gas mileage.

My 2011 Fit Sport gets about the same gas mileage as my 1990 Civic wagon and its B18B1 engine swap. The wagon doesn't have to be downshifted two gears to make it up some slightly lengthy hills on some back roads on my way to and from work - the Fit downshifts itself because the ECU knows its gutless little turd of an engine cannot pull the car up a hill with more than a 5% grade.

ok....

How much did the Wagon Weigh? With the B18b, maybe 2200lbs? 135hp will haul around 2200-2300lbs pretty easily. If we had the same standards as 20 years ago for safety we could probably be pushing 45-50mpg on a vehicle like the fit. Imagine if the fit shed 400lbs removing ABS, Airbags, had a much less stiff chassis, etc..., it would be probably in the 50mpg range. My Dad's VW Rabbit Diesel Pickup was pushing 45mpg... but it was a study in compromise.

Vehicles are getting heavier OR more costly.

I can't imagine what the Civics of the early 90's would be rated in todays Crash tests.

Is it normal that the gas millage is worst at the beginning or is there something wrong with the car?
I just did a test by driving once across the island and back and got pretty good values:
Highway: 50.5 mpg (going 50 mph)
Local Roads: 26.2 (considering that the island is pretty hilly that sounds OK).

So I guess it was just that I did too many short trips before...

Thanks for your advice!

great mileage

I just got mine yesterday. After 30 some miles (it was at 14 when we left the dealer) the mpg was reading 29 something. I am now at 155 miles and the mpg is reading 35! I am very conscious of the MPG bar and it's movement. Like any gas powered car takeoffs are the worst time for mileage. Outside of that situation I never see the MPG bar drop below 15. I take advantage of downhill situations and coasting. This car coasts well. I have the automatic. I expect to get about 37 or so when all is said and done in my daily driving. I had a loaded 6 cyl 2003 Accord that I got almost 27MPG from on my daily driving.

My Car hates stop and go city driving, I get about 24-26 in a very hilly, very stop and go driving area.

I go out on the highway and cruise at 62mph, I hit 40 mpg all day long in my auto.

Put your PSI up to 40 for the summer, and accelerate slowly from a dead stop, and you mpg will go up 2-3 mpg for city driving.

I have noticed, by the feedback MPG bar, that peak fuel efficiency is in the 30-50 MPH range. It appears that sensible driving at these speeds would yield 45-50 MPG rates. Some day, when I have time to burn, I'm gonna take this on a real flat road I know that is long enough, set the cruise, and test all speeds from 30 to 70.

I am at high altitude (around 5000 feet), so I think mpg suffers a tad. Even considering this, I get 29-30 in town driving and high 30's to low 40's on highways going 45- 65 mph. My mileage seems to go down when traveling over 70 mph. I have a 2010 AT

Electronic fuel injection compensates for lower air pressure, so your mileage shouldn't suffer as a result. It may actually be a tad higher (but HP will be less).

Steve- thanks. My mpg seems about the same as others in lower altitude, so that makes sense.

I just got my 2011 base automatic last week. On Monday's my commute is 90 miles each way, with about 80 of it interstate. I filled up with 87 before I left, reset the trip, and hit the interstate with the cruise control set on 70. When I pulled into the office the gauge showed 38.0 mpg. That's much better than the 15mpg I was getting in my old Jeep Grand Cherokee. At $4 per gallon for gas, my monthly savings is just under $20 per month less than what I am paying for the Fit. I'm betting that if I drop it back to 65 I can average 40mpg. I'm pretty satisfied with that.

In the late 80's I had a 1984 Ford Escort diesel. Living in Maine I had to plug in a block heater in the winter, but it got great mileage. In the summer I got 63mpg driving between Maine and Philly. I think I paid $1000 for that car. I wish I could find another one.

A bit. But I still have my Suburban, so if I need a power fix, I can take it around town and ride the bumper of a Prius or a Fiesta.

I had my best MPG reading on my last tank of gas; 43.2mpgs over 425miles!! The gas light didn't come on til i hit about 400miles.

Also my Fit is a 5MT and thats driving around Tampa FL (no highway driving!) just really conservative driving! I normally get about 40mpgs.

The Fit Rocks!

Hills (and mountain hills) and stupid stop lights that make you idle there for at least 3 minutes when no cars are driving across the intersection KILL my mpg.

I usually got around 45 -> 50 mpg with some hypermiling when I came home late at night. Typical day time driving in stop and go traffic is 30 -> 35 mpg.

Ooooh never thought of it, but the dealer may have topped off the tank when we got the car. I'll subtract the 14 miles that were on it and compute the mileage for the first tank that way. Comes to 35.4MPG. If they didn't top off it comes to 36.9. Either way it's better than the 26.7 or so I was getting with my other Honda. This is effectively like gas dropping a dollar a gallon for me. I am a happy guy. We drive many miles each month and this is gonna be huge. It's about $105 dollars in savings each month.
