filter in a GE8 AT???

I was digging around some part websites getting prices for possible projects when I noticed a subcategory for AT...I dug into it further and noticed it was selling replacement internal and external filters for our Fits?

Can someone confirm this? if so I would want to pull mine to take a look at them ...I have 66.5k on mine and worry about the tranny in this car....

There is an external inline filter underneath the airbox on the backside of the transmission.

I also added a Magnefine inline filter into ours since the transmission cooler/heater lines are rubber, and easy to get the filter onto.

Both are about $15-20 each, IIRC.

I'm surprised that this is on the A/T's anymore. Our old 08 CRV did not include the filter but the 07's did...

Thanks for the link. I've seen the external filter when working on the car and seems like it can be replaced easily enough.

But should It be replaced? I've seen no mention of it from any of the fit freakers here with the exception of one with a GD3 that did it....I would have to imagine replacing it couldn't hurt: our little AT work very hard....

I also wonder if I would need to drain the tranny before changing the filter?

Would bet your CRV had it, but you didn't pull up the correct schematic. They are generally in-line like the Fit and I4 accord, or have a serviceable element like the V6 accords.

My guess is that it's in-line.

If you plan on keeping the car forever, go for it. That strainer probably is probably a screen without filter media, but a lot of gunk and abrasives settle in that lower pan area, so it would probably help with longevity if you clean out that area and clean or replace the strainer too.

I plan on replacing the in-line and didn't even know about the screen. An additional cooler could help to add life to your tranny too, even though the car is small.

Yeah, I'll prob give it a shot, the internal strainer looks like a PITA to replace though.

As for the cooler, it sounds like a good idea: might do like Lyons did and strap it to the radiator.....

Only a little fluid will spill when you change the filter. I'd coordinate doing this when changing fluid though (at least the fluid that can be drained).

Should it be changed? Fluid and filter? Only you can answer this. Well you and your maintenance minder. I have to admit, letting it go 60K plus miles according to the minder makes me queasy. I think I will though. If I were autocrossing (an automatic?) or towing, or carrying heavy loads (a Fit?) I'd be doing it every 30K or less.

But the newer Honda transmission fluid looks delicious. I may give in early.

By all means change the fluid early if your car doesn't have DW-1 in its transmission. Changing ATF on the Fit is ridiculously easy. If you can change oil, you can change ATF on the Fit. There's a drain plug that accepts a 3/8" ratchet on the front side of the transmission. The only special tool needed is a long funnel to get ATF into the transmission since the dipstick is located down low.

I've changed the ATF 3 times in 45k miles, and will likely change it again before summer is out. Shifting got quite bad after 15k miles. New ATF helped smooth out the shifting.

For the filter, I'd change it every 30-50k miles, depending on how hard the car is driven. It's cheap insurance against an untimely failure.
