2010 Sport, manual, 36mpg daily driving, 38.7 best to date
I have a simple free app on my iphone whereby I simply plug in the odometer reading, cost per gallon, and how much fuel I to fill it up and it gives me both an actual mpg for that tank as well as the rolling average since I started using it the month after I bought the car.
My daily communte consist of some stop and go for about 5 miles and about 18-20 miles of cruising around 60-65 with a couple of lights thrown in. At nights and on weekends I am doing stop/go traffic around the typical suburban Dallas community I live in with occasional 10-15 minutes sprints on the highway.
Since I started using the app on 8/20 I have slowly increased the mpg per tank from 32.1 to the last 2 tanks both achieving 36.0 on the same drive. My rolling average is now 34.93 since I started using it and continues to go up with every tank as I'm consistently able to achieve 35 or better.
I could possibly get a couple more mpg's out of the drive if I drove the car allot slower and held up traffic but my 18-20 of the commute to work is on a 2 lane county hwy with 55-60 mph speed limit so its not practical. And compared to every other car I've owned the gas mileagfe is stellar.
I recently met up with a bunch of old friends at a DE at Hallett Raceway outside Tulsa. After the jokes about the car were exhausted I started getting questions about the car. Mind you these were all fellow BMW and Porsche club guys with track cars. When I told them that even the way I was driving the car, like an ass, with them as we were hitting the bars I was still getting 35 or so out of it they all freaked. In the BMW and Porsche world we don't give allot of emphasis on mpg but we do get excited when we get over 20 out of our old 911 or M3.
The funniest part of the trip was that EVERY time we went somewhere my car was full, everyone was riding in it. I had a professional Grand Am racer and several other guys hitching rides in it and asking questions about the car. Saturday night 5 of us were in it driving like an idiot around downtown Tulsa.
If I didn't sell some Fit's for Honda that weekend I'll be shocked...I love this little car.
UPDATE as of 9/27 I got 38.7 mpg on my same drive, I had the oil changed last week to 0W-20, tires rotated, and I bumped the pressures up to 35psf cold (they were at 32).
Here is my apps screenshot...
