From Toro's website (I believe they use Tecumseh engines, but they might be Briggs and Stratton. And I'm not sure about their ride-ons).
Fuel Brand:

We recommend that you use a national name brand to ensure that you are beginning with good quality fuel. Use fuel with an octane rating of 87 or as close to 87 as you can. Higher octane fuels offer no benefit for our residential products and some high octane additive packages are not good for small engines. Only purchase what you expect to use within 30 days, or add stabilizer. Fuel stabilizer is available from most Toro dealers.

Ethanol fuel: Gasoline with up to 10% ethanol is acceptable to use per engine manufacturers guidelines.
From Briggs' website:
All 4 stroke cycle spark ignited engines

Fuel must meet these requirements:
  • Clean, fresh, unleaded gasoline.
  • A minimum of 87 octane/ 87 AKI (91 RON). High altitude use, see below.
  • Gasoline with up to 10% ethanol (gasohol) or up to 15% MTBE (methyl tertiary butyl ether), is acceptable.

From Honda's website
Honda engines are designed and certified to run on regular unleaded gasoline.
Gasoline is allowed, by regulation, to contain a variety of additives. The same regulation limits how much of some additives, such as alcohol, can be included in the fuel and still allow it to be sold as gasoline. A maximum of 10% ethanol is allowed in gasoline (other oxygenates are also listed). Honda engines are designed for good performance and efficient operation using gasoline containing from 0 to 10% ethanol.
Ryobi 2-cycle
Use unleaded gasoline intended for motor vehicle use
with an octane rating of 87 [(R + M) / 2] or higher. This
product is powered by a 2-cycle engine and requires
pre-mixing gasoline and 2-cycle lubricant.

Ethanol (ethyl or grain alcohol) 10% by volume. You may use
gasoline containing up to 10% ethanol by volume. Gasoline
containing ethanol may be marketed under the name “Gasohol.”
Do not use E85 fuel.
Echo 2-cycle is the only one that differs, but it'll just have to get over itself.
A 50:1 ratio with 89 Octane fuel can be used in all ECHO 2-stroke equipment, provided the oil is ISO-L-EGD and JASO M345 FC/FD certified. ISO-L-EGD and JASO M345 FC/FD oil must be used with a mid-grade (89 octane) or premium gasoline in all 1997 and newer engines.
please continue...

If I had a choice, at the same price, I would choose straight gasoline; I prefer my alcohol in beverages.

To be competitive economically, pure gasoline would have to be no more than 3.3% more expensive than E10.
Thanks, this is very helpful, along with some of the other comments here.
