The Truth about the horn upgrade (upgrade to Accord horn)
The Truth about the horn upgrade (upgrade to Accord horn)
The truth is the Accord low tone horn has slightly less sound than the Fit stock horn. The tone is different, but the Accord horn is not louder.
The actual Honda Accord has two horns, a low and a high tone. So when someone toots the horn on the Accord you hear the sound from two 108 decibel horns. On the Honda Fit, there is only one 110 decibel horn or the "meet meet" you hear. I am guessing they wanted to save a little money or maybe they didnt have room for two separate horns so they simply went with the single 110 decibel "meet meet" horn.
I tried the Accord horn out and the tone was different, but I concluded there was slightly less sound than the stock horn. Therefore, I switched back to the stock Honda Fit horn for safety reasons. That 3 decibels may not be much, but I figured it might mean the difference between an accident and a near miss.
If you want a horn which is much louder than go with the Wolo Bad Boy horn:
http://www.amazon.com/Wolo-Model-419...7435872&sr=8-1
You might have to do some permanent changes to the wiring meaning cutting, splicing, etc., but this will be a lot louder than the stock horn. In New York City, some of the taxis have switched to the Wolo Bad Boy. Instead of the regular Crown Victoria honk honk there is this high tone blaring which almost sounds like a siren. Every time they use this horn, traffic definitely notices and from several floors up in an apartment with the windows closed you can hear it.
If you want a different tone than what you have most certainly get the Accord horn. It will not be louder and might even seem quieter. However, if you want a much louder horn than go aftermarket with the Wolo Bad Boy.
I will not be switching to the Bad Boy because I do not want to permanently change any of the wiring up front. I want to continue on with plug and play. Does anyone know of any aftermarket horns out there which are plug and play?

I just checked in to make sure you wern't buying all the horns from walmart to try them and return them until you found the one you like.
The sound of the fit horn doesn't bother me, I can drive a car 50,000 miles and use the horn once or twice the whole time.

That's why I never bought the Accord one, after reading peoples reviews and the fact that is not louder than the Fit stock horn. Getting the JDM "Euro" horn, eventually.
Severe- I know I know. your one of those idiot NY drivers that has to use your horn atleast 20 times a day. And don't say some of us have jobs to work as if I don't. I work at least 60 hours a week doing a real job. Not running errands to appraise cars and returning stuff to walmart cause Im too damn cheap. Btw your posts suck, you google for 5 min and then think your the foremost expert on car maintenance.
Why not install the Accord low tone horn in addition to the stock Fit high tone horn? Then you'll have a definite improvement without going to an air horn which can be unreliable sometimes with the cheap ones. Yes Wolo Bad Boy aka Stebel Nautilus Compact have plenty of reported failures.

Are you sure about the decibel numbers? I know that decibels isn't the ultimate measure of what SOUNDS louder, because we hear different tones differently, but the Accord horn sounds way louder to me.
And some of us need horns because others of us drive while talking on the phone and are all over the road.

Arghhh, one of these days, i'm gonna have to get off my lazy ass and wire up part two of my PIAA Dual Sport Horns... relay, fused battery connection and all. (Hint hint)
!I use my horn frequently. I guess that's because I live in a metropolis and yes, sometimes you have to let other people know you're there in tight streets and alleyways and in bumper to bumper traffic on the freeway.
I'll probably just try the Accord horn out, I don't like the stock tone regardless if it's louder or not, and it's only $10. I'm definitely not cutting up wiring just yet.
Goobers: I had the PIAA Dual Sports before and I loved them. You should put them in ASAP.

These posts drive me nuts. Volume isn't everything although in this case it is the most important factor. The tone (especially one that is different from most anything out there) can be very important. The ear will hear different frequencies (and the body can feel many).

hmmmm... I wonder if you can return the oem Fit horn once replaced with the accord horn at Walmart.

Hella Supertones. I stand by them. Those little bastards will cause instant headaches. I hit my horns and people go "WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT?!?". Cheap and semi easy to install with excellent results.
I have a set bnib 4 sale too...

HowStuffWorks "What is a decibel and how is it measured?"
On the decibel scale, the smallest audible sound (near total silence) is 0 dB. A sound 10 times more powerful is 10 dB. A sound 100 times more powerful than near total silence is 20 dB. A sound 1,000 times more powerful than near total silence is 30 dB. Here are some common sounds and their decibel ratings:
- Near total silence - 0 dB
- A whisper - 15 dB
- Normal conversation - 60 dB
- A lawnmower - 90 dB
- A car horn - 110 dB
- A rock concert or a jet engine - 120 dB
- A gunshot or firecracker - 140 dB
THIS: STEBEL S.p.A. - horns You can even hear it!
A great little horn that does the job. I ain't "plug-and-play" but I don't live in that kind of world anyway. Search the forum for it - you'll need to run it through a relay.
matt1357 You made me
, but please don't group all NY drivers into one lump.

Love the meep meep horn...I work in an actual, honest-to-god bad neighborhood, the kind of neighborhood where "disrespecting someone" can get you shot and as we all know we often misinterpret honking the horn as some sort of attack on our honor. Somehow the meep meep horn doesn't get people as riled up.
Although that tricked out Escalade that passed me on the right at traffic light? Yeah, still not honking at that dude.
