Rustproofing - 2012 Honda Fit (white)
#22
Hey guys, thanks a lot for the useful input and great laughs..
I'm not going to do any rustproofing, ever, just going to:
Anyway, I'm determined to experiment this with my own car and finally have solid proof that the rustproofing industry is a scam ;p If I'm able to keep the car for so long, without major incidents..
I'm not going to do any rustproofing, ever, just going to:
- Wash the car once a week during the winter
- Avoid using the car in winter days that are wet and slushy
- Avoid heated indoor garages
- When eating a high sodium meal, open the windows when burping
- Go to church more often
- Donate money to starving kids in China (the kids that made my car)
- Be fabulous at all times
Anyway, I'm determined to experiment this with my own car and finally have solid proof that the rustproofing industry is a scam ;p If I'm able to keep the car for so long, without major incidents..

I wash every two weeks in winter and the car too. I park outside as my racetrack is in garage.
Add to your list - Cheer more for Habs.

My take on this issue (after living with salt and grime here in Quebec) is:
-The parts that usually rust are the consumables. Springs, shocks, belts, etc. None of these are protected by rustproofing.
-Resale not affected by regular rustproofing. Try "selling" that to a dealership when you trade in your car.
- And finally too many horror stories of over spray getting on your paint by lazy installers.
Better off cleaning your carriage once in a while with a power washer IMHO.

It sounds like you've already come up with a plan Toast, but I thought I'd throw in my two cents.
I had the same dilemma when I bought my Fit (2010, LX, Black). I live near Toronto so I see plenty of rust buckets on the roads. The dealer had a "special" with Ziebart Rust Protection for $600 up front, plus $50 per year for an inspection/touch-up of the rust coating. Seemed like an overpriced money grab so I said no.
I did some quick research and decided to go with Krown. Had it rustproofed within a few hours of picking up the car from the dealer. They charge $110 per year, and I've been really happy so far. I'm a tad obsessed with washing my car, so it might be overkill getting it rustproofed, but I feel better having it - especially since I plan on having my Fit for a while.
Anyway, good luck with your plan, but thought I'd share.

Let me put it this way:
Your car is built in Japan and was subjected to a month of salt air as it was transported across the Pacific Ocean or further.
If it wasn't rust proofed in Japan, then in a year you'd have plenty of rust all over it. Adding rust proofing after the trip does nothing, the corrosion would already be started.
The materials they use in cars now are not the same materials they used 30 years ago when Toyotas and Hondas would rust through in quick fashion.

Black3sr - We're neighbours! I live in Waterloo.
As SgtBaxter noted, Honda does provide a basic rustproofing at the factory. In Canada (and US?) the Fit comes with a 5 year rust-free warranty. So, I agree that if no rust proofing was added at the factory you would already see minor rusting. However, what Honda provides doesn't last forever. If you wash your car at times than the factory rust proofing will probably last for a lifetime.

Also, as someone else mentioned surface corrosion on underside parts is nothing to worry about. These parts are engineered to corrode a certain amount. Rust proofing isn't for suspension parts, it's for body panels.
Not sure how the california guys wouldn't have any underside corrosion at all, unless they simply park their car in a garage and never go outside when it's raining? If that's the case why even have a car, lol
