You must be REALLY young to have not heard of wheels referred to as "Mags."

"Mag" is a term my dad (and granddad) used to use when replacing his factory wheels/hubcaps with aftermarket wheels for his various muscle cars. Almost ALL aftermarket wheels used to be referred to as "Mags".

"Hey man... I think I'll go down to the autoparts place this weekend and look through the catalogue for some new mags." (also referred to as "racing mags.")

If you're not American by birth, you're too young, your dad/granddad wasn't into "customizing" their muscle car(s) -- or all of the above -- you wouldn't be familiar with the term "mags".

Learn something new every day, eh?

I understand what you did there because my grandpa was a car junkie back in the day.

What kind of wheels are you looking for? Have you seen any styles that caught your eyes? lots of spokes? fewer spokes? mesh? polished? painted?

I know a few Canadians and I've never heard them refer to wheels as mags haha

I have heard some old codgers refer to wheels as mags.

We recommend 16x7 or 17x7 with 45mm offset and tires 205/45x16 or 195/45x17 with 1.5" drop.
choose yuour tire by the tire specs on TireRack and the lap times you want from their tests.

^^

Now as far as "Mags" goes, I always heard that the first "die cast" aftermarket wheels were made of Magnesium. Initially that was race tech, being it was WAY lighter, but it's a PITA, as they need constant cleaning and inspection for pits and cracks. They were super popular amongst hot rodders and "Cafe" bikes. Several of my bikes have Magnesium wheels from the '60-'70s and my Dad's hot rod '75 Honda does. They are too fragile though for me to risk on CA pot holes

Depends on the young folk and their car circle

I haven't seen or heard the term "mags" be used by anyone under 50, Canadian or American. Yes from what i've gathered it was because OG racing wheels were made out of magnesium.

cbigc69 there's tons of wheel threads on here, take a look through them and decide for yourself.

Then learn that mag wheels were just that: made from magnesium for lightness and ease of molding. circa 1956 or so. I had a set. Wish I had them back; damn things are worth a fortune.

You can say that again! I've gotten offers for the wheels on my Dad's bike that are worth 5x what the bikes valued at

I was really young... all I remember is my dad, granddad and their garage buddies calling them "mags" or "racing mags".

I'm pretty sure it got to a point though where most enthusiasts were calling "cool-looking" aftermarket wheels mags, regardless of their substance. I knew a guy younger than my dad (a later period) that bought a Plymouth SuperBee, purchased aftermarkets, and said he just bought some "brand new aluminum mags".

Regardless... my dad and others called them mags, etc. Whenever I watch some of the satellite muscle car auctions I always think of "mags" when seeing the wheels on those vintage rides.
