DIY: Big Brake Kit

This is what I have been up to the last couple of days; I put together a Front DIY BBK using my friends at Car-Quest and Napa. Going to a larger pad and rotor (11") set up. It bolts right on. NO fabricating involved. The rotor backing plates will have to be slightly bent by hand to accommodate the larger rotor.

Specs:

Stock Rotor Diameter: 254mm (10"), Wieght: 11 lbs
Stock Caliper Piston Diameter: 53mm
Stock Pad Contact Surface: 90mm long x 48mm tall

BBK Rotor Diameter: 280mm (11"), Weight:11.5 lbs
BBK Caliper Piston Diameter: 56mm
BBK Pad Contact Surface: 105mm long x 50mm tall

BBK Parts:

Calipers: 1997 Acura Integra Type R
Pads: 1997 Acura Integra Type R
Rotor: 2009 Mini Cooper SOHC non-turbo 280mm*

*Make sure to specify "280mm"!!! For some reason Pep-boys gave me 276mm, they are close but too small.

NOTE: The 280mm Mini Cooper rotors ARE Hub Centric.

BBK OEM Part Numbers:

Caliper: OEM Type R (x1) 19-B1461 and (x1) 19-B1460
Pads: OEM Type R (x1) CXD503
Rotors: OEM Mini Cooper (x2) 48880606 or 326610

My BBK Set Up:

Capilers: OEM Type R Calipers (x1) 19-B1461 and (x1) 19-B1460
Pads: Hawk HPS, HB143F.680
Rotor: Stop Tech (x1) 127.34100R and (x1) 127.34100L

Review:

I have had the setup on the car for over 2k miles now. The car has a lot more bit and is very responsive under braking. I suggest upgrading to a wider tire is a must from the 195, I doubt the OEM tires keep up with the brakes.

Problems:

First, Remember these calipers are REBUILTS!!!! That means they were replace because they had issues and were rebuilt. The left caliper I bought slides fine in my hand, but when it's on the car under heavy pressure it binds. At first I thought this was air in the system, but when I was on the high way and I was on the brakes; it pulled right. This indicates that "only the front right side caliper was working". Car Quest warrantied it, no hassle.

Second, I got air all the way into the master and it took a long time to get it out. The best advice I can give is bleed it manually with someone who has bled brakes before. The wives/ girlfriends can cause a lot of painful grief if you end up getting air all the way back in the master.

Amazing job! I'm sure it stops very well, your GE8 should be a little lighter than the DC2-R and has quality rubber so it should haul you down WAY better than stock.

I had an OEM ITR caliper/pad setup (mine had redrilled Prelude 11" rotors) on my old '93 Civic coupe. It fit easily under 15x6.5" Konig Heliums, and the improvement
was very noticeable. I also added a larger 15/16" master cylinder and some Motorcraft? high-temp DOT 4 fluid, and don't think they ever exhibited any fade coming
down Sierra Nevada mountain roads for my commute. Excellent upgrade! :thumbups:

Dang, that looks sweet! :D

I bet the car stops on a dime as well.

Real nice work on this DIY. A lot of extra meat on those new pads.

Thanks guys.

The Car-Quest/Napa Pads and Rotors are for fitment purpose only. I have a set of Stop Tech rotors and Hawk pads on the way. So i will post results asap.

How much did the calipers run you from Napa?

ThEvil0nE 08-05-2013 03:59 PM

thickness wise of the caliper, is there a difference between the two? stock vs integra?

The manager at CarqQuest he gave them to for $70 for the pair. I Think they go for $120/pair!?! best I can say is call your local stores.

MPA 08-05-2013 04:33 PM

Any chance these would fit under the stock 15" steelies?

I'm not quite sure what you mean. The Type-R caliper is bigger in every way, though. Longer, Wider, Taller.

To go along with this. ITR calipers should also interchange bolt pattern wise with s2k, rsx, rex-s, ect. Im going to go the type-s route when I need to replace my fronts. One more advantage to 5 lug :D

Also wondering this, so thank you for checking. I will start piecing this kit together shortly if they do fit under the steel wheels. It's about time for me to change pads and fluid anyway. Thanks again.

Thanks.

Fit = 10" front rotor
RSX = 10.3" front rotor
Integra Type-R = 11" front rotor
S2000 = 11.8" front rotor
RSX-S = 11.8" front rotor

I would be concerned that the brake bias would be pushing the limits with a larger set up. The 11.8"+ would be great if the rear drums were replaced with a rear disc conversion. The S2000's have 11" rear rotors to compensate for bias.

If the bias was too far forward; the car would under-steer into heavy braking turns, and you would loose trail braking.

I would be interested in a link for a rear conversion kit if anyone knows of one. The T1R seems to be GD exclusive?!? Anyone know?

Nice work and thanks for sharing. How much did the entire setup run you?

Type-R Calipers: $70/pair
Stop Tech Rotors: $155/pair shipped
Hawk HPS Pads: $66 shipped

Total = $291.00 USD

Shu 08-05-2013 09:36 PM

That's one inexpensive BBK! My car has less than 7k miles on it, but I may do this upgrade soon.
