What are you running for a Track-day Tire and Wheel set-up?

Wheel size?

Tire size?

Weight of combo?

 

I'm running a 205/50r16 595 rs-r on a 16x7 RPF1 for my Fits trackday tires.

Tire weight: 22 lbs
Wheel weight: 13.8 lbs

I'm looking for a 215, but there isn't much out there.

J's Racing tire set up is an interesting one; they run a Bridgestone/ Yoko 215/50R16 in the front and a 205/50R16 in the rear.

I'm also wonder what set-up size groups like Spoon and HPD run?

 

How do you like the Federals as circuit tires? I've heard mixed reviews and mumblings about greasy after laps, etc. They are budget priced which I like since i'm not trying to compete, but would be annoyed if they started giving me trouble after 3-4 laps.

215/50 would be good to get the most out of 3rd gear + the grip of course. I assume they're running R comps that are fairly light or are they running street tires?

I plan to throw some 195/55/15 BFG SC2 on my steelies for track days.

I might even paint the wheels. Boom.

This is my first season on the Federals. Cheap and tires never sat well with me. What I have heard; they hold their own for auto-xing and track-days. So I was suckered into a set. The RS-Rs are very limited in sizing, the 16 in wheel only has 2 sizes. Track-days aren't serious enough to blow through expensive tires.

The greasy comment.. let me guess an Evo or WRX guy told you this? Haha. Those cars are 3300-3500lbs which will over heat any tire quickly, I love my WRX but its a piggy. The AWD doesn't help to keep temps down either. I don't foresee an issue on the 2400 lbs Fit.

What I have been told is when they break traction, they break quickly making them feel "greasy". This isn't a problem, It's more comparable to a race tire than a DOT. The other tires that are comparable; like the Ventus, Direzza zii... break traction gradually.

Federal had a few bizarre issues, I believe they sorted them out.

I'm in New England, but Laguna Seca is on my bucket list.

 

Ahhh break traction quickly, that's one of my pet peeves. I mean for the price though worth a shot.

Actually greasy comment came from Honda guys, but I think they're more used to high dollar tires and it's unfair to compare because of the price.

Laguna is on my bucket list as well. Finally building a "track car" this year so I'll get out there hopefully. It's expensive (to me) compared to Buttonwillow or Willow Springs but the experience will be worth the price I think.

 

The Feds don't break quickly as in; they lose traction quickly. They act more like a Slick, they are either on or off. A DOT tire has a bigger "window" to be able to react (if that makes any sense..).

Honda guys really! I have heard people having issues in the hotter states. Hot days can also push the limits of the tires.

You have a bunch of nice tracks nearby. Laguna is a good drive from SoCal, a trailer might be in order. The NJ track is very nice.

 

I'm actually in NorCal but spend a bit of time In both, I lived in SoCal for quite a few years, so try to visit some.

Tons of good tracks out here, we're spoiled like that. Most of them are in places where it gets a bit hot though during "the season".

May try the Feds out, I need to look at sizes...

 

Typically you run a wider tire on a FF track car. J Crimson ran 15x9 fronts and 15x8 rears. Helps reduce understeer and get the car rotating.

 

What size tires was he running?

He doesn't have any issues with the ABS/ Traction control running different diameter tires?

 

15x9 front with 225/45-15 and 15x8 with 205/50-15 rears. He had a GD3 so no traction control to worry about.

 

That's only a 4 mm in height (diameter) difference front to rear. Nothing to worry about even if it did have TC.

Those are very short tires, almost 1.5 inches shorter than OEM. I wonder how much top end is effected on the straights. Or if he notices.

 

I've been through several setups. I am doing AutoX exclusively at the moment and limited to SCCA Street Touring FWD class limits so I am on a 15x7.5 wheel.

Started with 15x7.5 +32 Konig SW388 reps @ 15lbs

Now on 15x7.5 949 6ul's, so +36 and 11.6lbs

Have run the following tires:
195/50R15 Toyo R1R
205/50R15 Falken 912
205/50R15 BFG Rival
225/45R15 Hankook RS3

Falken's were for daily use and OK for 30K +

Ran the RS3's for almost 1.5 years till I tried a mixed setup with Toyo's on the rear. REALLY liked that, but needed to go to all 4 tires the same for contingency purposes.

LOVED the Toyo! Made a huge impact in speed of the car, and helped expose suspension/setup areas to improve. They DID NOT like to be hot, so I kept a water sprayer on hand and hit them every run possible. Being only 140tw though they wore QUICK, and with the coming rules shifts in the SCCA Solo program (moving to 200tw minimum rules) I phased them out early to move to the "new hotness" BFG Rival.

Been on the Rivals for about half a season (<10 events) and not very happy. Had tread splicing on two and separated a tread cap on one. Seemed to be an issue with the 205's as they recalled/pulled the whole initial crop of them. They also seem to attract punctures. I have had 3 staples/nails/screws I had to have patched. Tire is good in that it works "out of the box" and wears well even with my aggressive style, but does not seem to hold grip or put down power as well as the Toyo did. They aslo work HOT which is nice, but can be sprayed for consistency if you prefer. This past weekend at our season opener in the rain though they were CLEARLY at a loss to other car's on "rains" or even Dunlop ZII's



Eventually (hopefully by 2015 season) I will have a set of 15x10's for the front and be running a 275/35R15 Hoosier A6 and 205's on the 7.5" out back and my LSD/Clutch/Flywheel and IM installed so I can jump to F Street Prepared

Contingencies and RComps big things big things!

 

I'm using 15x7 CE28s with Advan A050s, 215/50 up front and 195/55 out back. Increases the final gear a bit more and I am limited to about 202km/h with this setup. Weight not certain, the wheels are about 9lbs and the tires I think are about 20~21lbs.

Looking at going up to the new 16" CE28s only because thinking of going with the J's/Seidoya front 6 piston calipers and need 16s.

 

I have a set of 225/50R16 XS coming in Friday. This is a very popular size and cheap.

I'm a little worried that it's going to be a tight fit on my current suspension (if it fits). Currently, I'm on Eibach springs and stock struts. I have a set of coil-overs on the way that will free up a lot of room between the suspension and tire.

There isn't much front fender to roll. I wonder if there is Carbon Fenders on the market, usually they are 5~15mm wider than OE.

J's sells some fenders in FRP that are 15mm wider. They were used on the racing Fit with a K20 in the UK if I am not mistaken.

 

Really! For the GE? Do you have a link? That would be perfect.

 

The J's wide fenders are for JDM front, unfortunately you can't use without the rest of the JDM front stuff.

Fitting 225 shouldn't be too much of a problem with a good pull and camber, definitely don't think you need to resort to fenders or overs as long as the wheel offset isn't over +40.
