Weird Smell From Vents
Weird Smell From Vents
Hi everyone,
I was wondering if anyone else has experienced a unpleasant odor from heating vents when turning on heater. This started about 2months ago. Seems to be worse after it rains or if it is moist out such as after snow. I replaced cabin filter still same smell. The inside of car after it rains out does have a damp smell to it making me feel water is leaking into car. Would not surprise me because my 91 hatch was notorious for water leaks. Car is 2013 sport. Any advice would be appreciated because the smell kind of makes you sick to your stomach. Does the air for heating system come through windshield cowl?

Very common issue, here is some info for how to fix it:

Nah nah nah. Guys it's easy, the smell is condensation on the evaporator anytime you run the AC or defrost, condensation accumulates. The easy solution is run the Ac or defrost like normal, a few minutes before you get to a destination to park for awhile, turn the Ac or defrost off, and turn on just warm air on feet. It'll evaporate the moisture off. And when you turn your car back on, bam! It's gone.
Update, wontfit was right. Did the heater for 10 minutes before destination no more smell. In fact quit using defrost all together. Forgot with this car AC runs when defrost is on. Thanks everybody for the help. Can breath easy again.
I have something similar happen when the heater's been running a while and it's gotten a little bit damp in my Fit. A vaguely musty smell. It's pretty infrequent - it's usually after I back the heat down a bit. If it's blazing hot, it's not there.
First winter that I've had this, and you nailed it exactly. The difference is that back in the fall I didn't spray lysol into the intake.
