USB specs for 2012 Base Fit
USB specs for 2012 Base Fit
I have been having trouble with my Fit's USB port charging my phone. I bought an inline meter for the USB and found this:
From wall charger: 4.9V, .95A
From Computer: 4.89V, 1.2A
From Fit USB: 4.83V, .38A
All measurements taken within minutes of each other to control for the state of charge of the phone.
So, the Fit is putting out about 40% of the amperage of a wall charger, and 32% of the amperage of the computer USB port. That explains the difficulty charging.
The question I have is, does anyone know what the port is supposed to be putting out? My local dealership didn't know. I thought some tech-minded people here might have an idea, or at least direct me to a source.
I could also just take my phone and meter to the dealership and see what another Fit puts out. That would require putting on shoes though...
Thanks,
Tom

The USB connection isn't really intended for charging, but for music playback. I think per the USB specs in theory it ought to be able to supply 500 mA (0.5 A), though I'm not positive on that. In practice, it basically is set up to be enough to power a thumb drive or to keep an iPod battery from discharging while playing music, and it does that.
As GolNat suggests, a car charger will work more effectively and is not very expensive at all.

On my Android S4 there is a Samsung app you can download that will show real-time charge current. I found using different cables made a big difference. I even modified a data cable to remove the data wires so that it would go into full charge mode and the GK USB port is nearly capable of matching the original wall charger current.
