looking at my dads new fit, saw this thing under the dash, it looks like a port, but its not, the pin holes are simulated, and closed off,
on the bottom of it is a button which appears to do nothing.
any ideas why this would be on a brand new car.

 

Looks like one of those Karr alarms that the dealer has to activate...

Type in Karr alarm into google images...you'll see some similar modules

I had something like that on my VTEC Del Sol when I got it in 94. It wasn't an alarm per se as much as an ignition kill (poor man's alarm system) that dealers install to get better insurance rates. You normally have to plug a coded module into it for the car to start. If you don't buy it, they just disable it, without removing the assorted wires (my dealer wanted $200 - no thanks, I can get a "real" alarm for that).

The one you show looks fancier than mine, and it's sixteen years later , so it might have more capabilities.

 

Only way to know what it is, is to see what that module is connected to.

 

Definitely looks like some sort of a security piece. Looking at the green button, I just see a panic button to kill the ignition...say if being car-jacked or something. hahaha

That's one good thing about the smart key system, if the fob gets too far away from the vehicle if the engine is running it will just die. Why this is not offered stateside I can't really understand.

That is one shitty looking installation though and definitely not from the factory. So if I were your Dad, I would be going back and telling the dealer I want a new lower dash panel as they screwed that thing in.

i think its kind of messed up that they modify brand new cars and don't tell the buyer.

but as long as it doesn't actually do anything (the button) he said he doesn't care

 

Yeah mine is similar but they actually put a blank plastic cover over it when I didn't buy it.

There's actually a little rats nest of wiring under there from it and lots of factory wires are tapped/spliced. I plan on removing the karr wiring one of these days. They actually mounted mine on the visible face of that panel so mine is even uglier.

 

that's a lousy ,cheap, half, arsed installation.

 

If its a new car why dont you just ask the dealer?

But seriously, lots of honda dealers have them on every car in their inventory. My dealer is one of them.

 

Could be a valet button. Unlikely to be an ignition kill buton as the fit comes with a far superior one called the imobilizer.

 

ive seen cars that still have payments on them and they can shut off the wen you dont make a payment.

 

The Keyless on hondas are in constant communciation? My altima had keyless start, entry, etc... and you could start the car and someone else could drive it away. it was a safety issue for them as they didn't want the car to shut off if the battery in the FOB died. it also increased the battery life of the FOB. It was handy because you could start the car, get out, lock it with the button on the outside, and walk away. The car would run (and warm up in the winter) and you didnt have to leave a key in the car.

OP, I agree with the aftermarket alarm installed by dealers. i'd have them remove it and fix any wiring they tapped into. never know when their lousy wiring job will cause a problem for you (your dad) in the future and some other dealer won't cover it... or maybe even they won't. tapped wires are not a good thing.

Looks like my car. My dealer puts those crappy alarms on every car. They get better insurance rates. Seems some bad people steal the cars off the lot.
