2013 Manual Sport using Oil
2013 Manual Sport using Oil
Hi everybody. I was wondering if anyone else noticed there Fit using Oil. Meaning when you change oil you mentally note mark on dipstick then check it at certain intervals to see if it is at same level. Right now I am at 40% remaining oil life and level has dropped some bit. Always check in morning after car has sat and in same spot. Car has 15000 miles. One thing I have been doing is using Vtec, pressing the gas pedal more forcefully so it engages Vtec. This is probably the first time I engaged Vtec because I baby my cars really bad. I was really surprised this car moves pretty good for such a small engine. My EF hatch that I put in a Vtec engine after I built it up always consumed oil when engaging Vtec as well, then again that engine turned 9500 RPM,s on highway when pushing it., awesome sound hearing a engine turn that high.
I have noticed that my '09 is using oil now. Mine has almost 120k on it though. I started to notice it a bit around 100k. How much is uses depends on how hard I drive it. If I am driving on the highway around 75mph, it will use oil much quicker than if I am driving 55-60mph. I usually will add some when I notice it's under full, but I don't know if it would ever drop to the bottom marker on the dipstick between changes if I didn't add any. I follow the maintenance minder and I'll usually end up adding some around 50-60%.
I have 170,000 mile on my '07. Still no noticable oil consumption.
I drive it "hard", lots of WOT and 80 MPH in mountainous regions. Just curious, how did you break in your Fit?

Wow. That's awesome. I can't speak for the original poster, but I pretty much drove mine "normally" for the break in period and for most it's life. I might have run mine WOT maybe once in the first 5k miles. I've redlined the car maybe a couple of times in it's whole life in 3rd gear. But other than that it's been mostly baby'd. I think this is a good discussion to have. Not just for the original poster, but for others we can learn of how these motors are running compared to how they have been treated. I can say I have always done the proper maintenance on my car. I've never let the MM go under 15% oil life. For most of the time I've had my car, I've changed it at 50%.
spreadhead, I drove it normally for first 5000 miles. Never steady state always changing speed and coasting down in speed to push rings into cylinder walls for good seating. Engines that I rebuilt I usually took to long road and did 10-15 passes to 30-40mph in second gear and coasted down to 5mph then repeated. Never had oil consumption on these engines but again they were non Vtec D15B2. I do know oil consumption is normal and every Manufacturer has an acceptable range that is to be expected. Never had to add oil before changing 15% though. I will keep an eye on it at 40%. Still think Fit is one of the greatest commuter cars made.
More importantly: how did you break in YOURS???
More importantly: how did you break in yours!??
Mine uses a little oil, but it's got 120k on it and it's always been driven pretty hard.
It never used oil when it was young, I could go a full interval without adding so I find it interesting you're losing oil at 15k miles, although I've seen other posters on here experience the same thing.

Interesting... and then has it always been " "hard", lots of WOT and 80 MPH in mountainous regions" ever since then?
During the first 500 miles did you *EVER* redline it, WOT or drive it "hard" even briefly?
Thanks. Cuz it sounds like what ever you did do, it was the right approach and probably what I wish I had done.

I'm sure I did WOT during test drive and probably occasionally during break in. I avoided Interstates for the break in. Been pushing it hard ever since.
My car uses less oil than I anticipated and probably less oil than any car that I have owned, including an '08 Fit.
Oil usage is normal. But you have to measure it in terms of miles. How much is consumed per 1,000 mi.? Per 3,000 mi.? Per 10,000 mi.? My car appears to be consuming 0 oil per 1,000 mi., and very little if any per 3,000 mi.
"I baby my cars really bad." Why do this? Dude, they didn't put VTEC in the car for emergency use only. Drive your car. Have fun. You're not going to break it.
Cheers.

Babying may be your cause. just as poor lube or overreving will score pistons, undereving will also. Even if you don't experience 'lugging' the piston rings can flutter which leads to high and nonuniform wear.
To find out if your oil loss is due to worn rings or external leaks drop the throttle at 3000 rpm and see it the exhaust is blue; if it is its worn rings, if not look for a leak.
ps poor lube also includes running low viscosity oil. low viscosity oil is the result of lubricant breakdown as the hydrocarbon or component chain lengths shorten with heat and pressure. In that case often the oil gets so thin it leaks past the rings even if the rings aren't worn, sort of like running on minus zero rated oil.
Perhaps you should change oil and filter and see if that doesn't cure your oil loss.

I usually change my oil when my maintenance minder is at 0%, no more than -500 so that's around 10 to almost 13 thousand miles. It doesn't drop much from the full line.
My car sees the redline often and I often cruise at 4200 rpm for 20 minutes if I'm running late for work. LOL.
I think for a Honda, it is within factory specs if it uses up to 1 quart per 1000 miles, so I would not worry about your oil consumption.

My 2010 Honda Fit Sport Manual USA spec uses some oil. Has around 70k miles. Use Mobil1 0w-20 Synthetic with that top of the line Fram 15k miles filter sold at Walmart. Always change the oil at 30% or higher number. Pay attention to how the oil looks and the engine personality. Car revs noticeably better with clean oil so I keep the oil in good shape. Put a bit smaller diameter tires on the car so now it turns near 4k RPM at interstate speeds. Always in the Vtec but only after the engine is warmed up. So reckon oil consumption indicates engine wear. Figure I still got a lot of engine life left as long as I keep the oil level up and keep changing it frequently. If not, oh well. I am having a blast wringing that little engine out and its just a $17k car so come worn out time, will make it a Spec B racer or trade it. Leaning towards Spec B racer. Enjoy your Fit and especially the Vtec! Vtec goes better with HPS Short Ram intake.
lol
Yeah. Today especially. Reckon this is subjective but boy was the Vtec Kicking hard today. Does it have anything to do with the 50 F temperature or rainy weather? Don't know but everyone around me was getting an earful of Vtec (HPS Short Ram installed so a bit loud). Part of the beauty of a Fit is that you can drive it for everything its worth, have a blast doing it and not be Public Enemy Number One.

Life is short. Have fun (be safe)!
