I made one of these out of 1/4" mdf as I was trying to keep the weight down. After seeing this post I did add the FIT badge to mine.
I did use some plastic vinyl molding for the area between the shelf and the back seats. Probably not as well made as the others here but it gets the job done.

The one I made weights 7 lbs total. I assume the one using 1/2 inch stuff would be at least twice that much.

Anyone know what the stock one weighs?

I want the privacy, but want the least weight possible (I am a moderate hypermiler). I was going to try and fab just a vinyl sheet and attach it somehow, but still mulling over ideas. Thx.

Might want to weight a sample of the vinyl first to get an idea of the final weight as it probably be more than you think.
I plan to make another one once I have some spare time to research some ideas. My goal is to have it a lot lighter than the 1/4" mdf and try to make it easier to store when not in use.
Post back what you end up making.

This looks great! I too would have carpeted the bottom. Perhaps if you haven't already carpeted it, as this thread is a bit old, and you haven't already replaced your trunk lights with brighter LEDs it might be neat to build in a little dome light to the bottom of the cover to light up the contents of the trunk. Do you find that it rattles?

it didn't seem to have any impact on the road noise in my car with the 1/2" board

Looks like luan to me. Great idea! i think luan would flex a whole lot less than mdf. I'ma think I'm going to do this too, if I have success I'll have to make one for the hubby's Matrix.

Great thread!

^ IDK what it is, what the thin and lightest stuff I could find. It does flex a lot, thus the support piece underneath, but It's just keep my stuff cover, nothing is going on it. the MDF Weighs a LOT.

I was going to use luan/luna plywood on mine, but it flexed waaayyy too much. So I used foam core poster board and made a wooden support brace for it. I redid it and the board is alot cleaner now. I also glued fabric to it that almost matches the Fit's seats.
