Cutting the rear coil/lowering spring GE8

Is it possible to cut a small portion of the coil spring? the upper part only? i heard that the front coil spring can't be cut, how about the rear spring? i just want to lower the rear a lil bit maybe half a coil or just one coil to be removed. Thanks

Sure you can cut them. Will it work? Not likely. Buy a set of Swifts.

I was told that the rear coil spring cannot be cut because of how the spring looks. Is it true? If you cut the dead coil the spring will not sit properly? Ge8 btw

Dude, this not a vintage muscle car! Set of progress springs are about 150 shipped.

If you cut the spring it will not seat correctly, eat the rubber cushion and eventually cause noise grinding on metal. Progressive springs are not good candidates for cutting in general! Seriously I DIY EVERYTHING and I wouldn't cut my springs like this.

Springs are cheap, you can easily get a set of used ones for $100 shipped on here. This is the way you should go.

Having said that, I bought used springs with one coil off the back cut off from a member on here. No issues at all. It works for me. The new cut area has a rubber cover on it and does not cause any metal on metal rubbing.

You won't die if you cut your springs in the rear, even a little. slimchriz is right.

If you have any second guess on what you are doing, and I assume you do because you made this thread, find a set of used springs.

already tried couple of springs like tein Stech, espelir active super down, tein Htech and eibach prokit.. I just want to lower the rear by lets say .5''

im currently using a lowering springs btw..

so cutting it will not have any major issues at all right? i dont mind the change in spring rate as long as the springs will not cause any annoying problems like rubber damage, unecessary noise and improper sitting that would be fine.

If you cut a dead coil it shouldn't change much of anything other than the spring length, which may make it no longer captive at full droop. If you can, cut the dead coil at the top if there is one there, otherwise, it may not sit right in the perch, which is a concern. I've had problems with that ages ago and actually had a spring fall out once, so I had to flip the spring. You could also ziptie the coil so it doesn't fall out since it's in the rear anyway and doesn't pivot much. I don't think the top and bottom perches are the same size in the rear though so you can't even do that... I may be wrong, I don't remember.

I've run Espiler ASD with ALL the dead coils cut off on a different car before and they never came out. Car was low but handled like poop.

I don't think cutting one dead coil off is a big deal though as long as you get it to seat properly.

thanks for the feedback sir.. we'll dismount the rear spring and check if cutting the dead coil will be of any issues. the scariest part is when the spring fall out as you've mentioned.. used cut ASD as well on civic ek's way back and it still sits properly. this rear coil of the GE is something way different in terms of design.

I believe the springs from either GD or GE can swap back and forth, so the diameters top and bottom and the perches should be the same or similar, so that's actually good to know for you jazzi.

GD springs fit the GE. They do feel a little bit softer in the GE than they did in the GD.

Modern springs are progressive and shouldn't be cut. Your insurance will not cover you if you get into an accident on cut springs and they feel the cause is suspension failure.

Went to a shop and they told me the dead coils cant be cut using a grinder because of the design wherein the coil sits from top to bottom. The coil from top and bottom is small and it sits exactly. If we cut the dead coil it becomes bigger then it will not sit properly on the mounting chances are it will create unnecessary noise.

a shop isn't going to do this for you. you are going to have to do it yourself.

I have skunk2 springs on my wifes car with the rear coil cut too. not one noise.

The top and bottom part of the coil is smaller than the middle part right? And the smalle coils sits on a rubber or its mounted to a somewhat "insert" that fits the small coil. If i cut the small portion of the coil, where will the bigger part coil sits? Its too big for the plate right?

Whats goin to be cut? Top or bottom part?

What springs are you using? It would be helpful to have a visual of how the coils are wound.

Currently using tein htech. I also have espelir and oem's. What will happen i think (having a hard time to explain lol) is the coil will not sit properly and will make unnecessary noise because the part where the coil is inserted is too small compared to the coilspring w/o the dead coil or lets say the very first coil which is the smaller one.

Do they look like this? These are the Insight spring apparently but I assume the Fit is similar.

I wouldn't cut those personally, but if I did, I'd probably cut the top instead of the bottom.
