Oil leak
 

Hi, New to the forum, her on behalf of an elderly family member who replaced a 2007 Fit with a 2019 Fit sport. Upon inspection for registration the mechanics discovered a leak, they suspect is the rear main seal. 2019 Fit Canadian model, made In Mexico92,xxxKm Automatic CVT Any ideas Thanks

I'm skeptical. It looks like you have oil leaking from above, a possible pan leak, and a possible RMS leak. Remove the black cover and you should be able to see inside to the rear of the engine. If under the flywheel you see wetness or even on, I'd look into a possible RMS.

I've had two mechanics say rear main seal without being able to say definitively, it's going to Honda tomorrow for a recall. We'll see what they have to say. Hopefully it's covered under warranty.

Looks more like transmission pan seepage than a rear main from that angle. If it is, should be easy enough to reseal it the next time the fluid is changed (if you're nearing 100k kms, then it should be due soon if not done).

For a rear main, it's not worth how much it costs unless it's a major leak. At 92000 kms, it's also about due for a new PCV valve. Sounds like yours might be going bad if it's getting leaks. If it's a minor engine oil leak, changing this will most likely slow it down to basically nothing. Way cheaper and more effective at stopping slow leaks.

Thanks for the input. First mechanic did suggest pcv valve as a possible cause. With the car on the lift they did sort of narrow it down to the rear main seal, if in fact it's a seal at all as there was oil above the pan. Leak is diagnosed as minor, no drips below in a few days.Going in for the recall soon. We'll see.

Back from Honda, they performed the recall. Cleaned the underside and let it sit, they don't see anything, said to come back in a week or 300km. It not being a major leak is good, but not knowing the source of the oil observed last week is concerning.

Followed up with Honda a week after they cleaned the area. No sign of a leak. "Bone dry" they said. We'll keep an eye out periodically.

I wouldn't be surprised if it took more like 3,000 km to see something if it's a slow leak.
