16" Full Size Spare, Valve Side Up - A Workaround

Last week, I started out on a trip, and ran into a tire problem in the middle of nowhere. Had to deal with the emergency spare, and didn't feel confident to finish the trip on the donut.

That's when I realized, I want to run a full-size 16" spare. It's a weird tire size (185/55/16) so sourcing it in the middle of nowhere is not easy. Using a car parts aggregator website, I found a local used matching rim to what I have, and ordered an extra 16" tire.

I knew in advance that I'd be losing the foam tray that holds the jack equipment - there is no room, as the mounted tire is considerably wider than the donut. The jack equipment (plus a pair of gloves and 13mm hex wrench, more below) is stashed in a shopping bag, pic 2.

With the rim mounted valve side down as Honda intends, it's impossible to get at the valve stem to fill it up. This is where I got creative. I didn't want to use valve extenders and the like. I wanted to make filling & checking the spare as easy as possible.

I decided to flip the tire, valve side up, by using a 7" threaded rod (scavenged from a 1" quill bicycle stem) to the threaded hole for the hold-down rod. Found the right combination of washers such that I could cinch it with a 13mm hex (size of the bicycle stem threaded rod head) to get it nice and tight.

Now I have a 16" full-size spare ready to go, and most importantly, valve side up, so I can lift the carpet, and the valve is right there for easy refill. No removing and flipping the tire over just to check or fill.

The tire comes right up to the carpet lid. I might want to reinforce that at some point like others have done here, with plywood or luan. I'll see how it works out first.

Nope, it's a 2016 LX CVT. Bought it new from a USA dealer, and it only came with the emergency spare.

As far as I know all Fits 2015-20, manual and CVT, came with the mini spare tire. I have a 2018 CVT and it has one.

Dealers are often misinformed or mistaken when trying to remember a whole bunch of things about the different cars they sell. And then of course there's the blatant lies.
