New Mexico is also number 1 in pedestrian deaths, which surprised me.

Thank you.

I remain a little puzzled. Just a few minutes ago, I read a "crime statistics" site that said that Rio Rancho was 16% below the national average in crime. That said, I agree with you. The consensus seems to be that New Mexico has high poverty and high crime, especially in the Albuquerque and Las Cruces areas. Maybe Espaņola, too. When all is said and done, I cannot tell if people in New Mexico live in fear for their lives every day, or if it is more a matter of remembering to lock your car when you go shopping. Where I live now, they recently put up a wall with razor ribbon on top around the fire station. I guess that means that I live in a "high crime" neighborhood.

New Mexico is one of the poorest states in the country. Where I live, the poverty rate is 20%.

The I-25 corridor (Las Cruces, ABQ) is a well-established pathway for drug smuggling and human trafficking.

So yeah, there are problem areas associated with the I-25 corridor.

Outside the I-25 corridor - where I live - crime is present, but I don't worry about my safety, or fear for my life, or anything like that.

My suggestion: Stop looking at crime statistics and freaking yourself out. The area you're looking at might actually be a lower crime area than where you live.

The only way to experience an area is to go stay there for awhile.

Before we moved here, we took two "vacations" - actually scouting trips - to make sure we could make it work. Only after that did we decide to make the plunge.

There shouldn't be any poor states.
