Oil Extractor

I posted recently that the oil drain plug had become one with the oil pan. I bought extractor sockets and universal extensions, and I'll try them in a couple of months.

In the meantime, I ordered a Vevor oil extractor from AliExpress. It' the same one that Amazon sells, but it costs less. I just used it, and it works. The directions are next to useless, but I figured it out.

I had to use the thinnest extension tube to fit it down the dipstick tube. I kept pushing till it stopped - about 2'. You don't actually pump the oil out. Instead, you pump it a few times to build up a vacuum. Then the oil runs out on its own, and you can hear it dripping into the container. Give it a pump or two every so often. This is not a speedy process, but I didn't time it.

When no more oil came out, I removed the lines and disconnected the main tube from the extension. They were both virtually dry of oil. I removed the cap on the pump and dumped the drain oil into a 5-quart bottle. It was almost exactly the same amount that I had poured into the engine, so there wasn't a lot of dirty oil remaining.

One change I would make to the design is having a separate drain cap. As it is, one opening is for the oil going in and the oil coming out. Because it needs a very tight seal on the top opening, it's difficult twisting the main drain hose onto the tank. In order to get rid of the oil, you have to remove it. I can see the one of the two clips breaking off, and that will probably prevent it from working.

I expect to get the oil drain plug off the pan the next time I change the oil, so I doubt I'll be using the pump very often. I still have to raise the car and crawl underneath the remove the oil filter.

Cool! Sounds just like the Mightyvac fluid extractor which I have. I've not used it on oil, just for ATF. It's ESPECIALLY useful for the GM-style AT drain pans which have no drain plug. You suck out the fluid first, then drop the pan afterward if you're changing the filter. Eliminates 99% of the mess!

My cars last because I DO change the fluids. The real enemy here in Chicago is rust.
