Question VIN #s

can anyone tell me how the VIN #'s indicate at what point in time a particular car came off the assembly line? I've seen a couple of cars in my area that have VIN #'s where the last 6 digits run from 703728 up to 709772. What VIN #'s should one avoid in purchasing, don't want to wind up with one that could have been sent back to the plant for "fixing up". Thanks for any info

I would love to get an idea of the VIN numbers and date of manufacturer from some folks who recently bought Fits. The one we are waiting on is mid 14,000 I believe, but they still can't even tell me when it is supposed to be delivered.

Has anybody taken delivery of one in the 13 or 14,000 range yet?

I'm waiting on one numbered in the mid 12000s, I'm thinking it should be fine. I've test driven one and it was pretty nice, probably a lower vin number than the one I'm picking up

I've been hunting the Cincinnati area for an EX Manual, and found this one on cars.com and then the dealer's site. I called them about it tuesday, they said it would be in today. Called today, and it wasn't in. It's in the 14,000s, so I'll let you know if it comes in. Hopefully yours will be here soon! New 2015 Honda Fit 5dr HB Man EX in Cincinnati OH | VIN:

It's probably going to be a while, friend. Honda is holding fits at the ports for inspection before release to dealer from what I understand

The VIN sticker on the driver's door jamb somewhere will also indicate the month and year of manufacture. If you snoop further into your car by removing plastic parts like part of the dashboard or behind the glovebox(es) you may find a more specific "born on" date that is listed on little stickers about the size of a price tag.

Good luck on yours too! Even the dealers are saying that they really have no idea how long it will take to get them on the lot. That's the frustrating part. But I would certainly rather Honda inspect and fix any issues before delivery instead of having to deal with them afterwards! So I guess I'll try to be patient.

I have been waiting for a VIN so I could secure the car for purchase since April. My VIN is 11049 with out any promise of shipping date. They could not tell me if the car was still across the border or if it is in SoCal. I am located in Vegas and so far the dealer I am working with has only received SIX Fits so far. I think SoCal is not letting them come this was to Las Vegas.

Tekmaniac -I'm not sure how many dealerships are in the Vegas area but I'd try to find another one. Better yet, work with a couple dealerships and see who can get you your car.
Also, I'm up in Washington state and I haven't seen too many at dealerships here yet. The dealership I only has them trickling in. I remember looking through their book of VINs for cars they will be receiving and there was a lot of Fits on there but very few received.

Thanks! We're getting closer. Anybody have one with a later VIN than 12,087 yet?

Ours is supposed to be in the mid 14,500 range but they are still saying that they don't have an ETA. They "think" it will be delivered by the end of July.

Picking mine up tomorrow. 71275_.

However, are we comparing apples and oranges? I think the LX and EX models, CVT and MT, all have different preceding portions of the VIN#s. Are the last 6 numbers going to be indicative of only your place in the series for your specific trim level? LX MT, LX CVT, EX, etc?

The last 6 digits of the VIns are sequential. That is each one is assigned to the the number of the car it was for that year's production. Once the model year changes, these numbers cycle back to zero.

The part of the VIN that relates to the trim and transmission for US cars are the 2 digits after the GK5.

That was my assumption, but I admit I did not know for sure. Thanks for the clarification.
I do know there doesn't appear to be any logical order to the way they are showing up at the local dealers. Two weeks ago they had sold all 3 of the first ones they had. Today they show having 3 on the lot:
Silver EX CVT VIN = 703790
Gray EX CVT VIN = 713669
Black EX CVT VIN = 701878

This is based on their own website (not Cars.com) and it has been accurate so far as to whether the car is "in transit" or "in stock".

The stutter in the initial release of the Fit has the serial numbers of cars arriving at dealers right now all mixed up. Normally, you would have expected the very low VIN cars, that were built several months ago, to have already been delivered to dealers and sold by now. But it appears that many of these low VIN cars are just now showing up at dealers alongside higher VINs that may have been built in as little as the last 30 days or so.

Each car has a date of manufacture posted on the sticker inside the drivers door. It states the month and year of manufacture.
As a rough guideline Cars with VINs:
Under 500 were produced 2/14 or earlier
500-2500 were produced during 3/14
2500-6500 were produced during 4/14
6500-11000 were produced during 5/14
11000-15000 were produced during 6/14
15000-17000 were produced during this month 7/14
These numbers could be made more accurate by reports from actual owners reporting their VIN and production dates, but this is what I observed over the past 4 months while monitoring the listings that showed up on cars.com
