The paddles do the same thing.
"downshifting" requires the RPM to climb from 2100 to whatever it is at in a lower "gear". The lag still exists as engine speed climbs, and the transmission simultaneously changes over to the new "gear" ratio.

I've tried it in both ECO and normal, ECO is just 10x worse.
Sport mode solves it a bit, because the RPMs hang around 3000 when driving. I am guessing this was the compromise Honda made when they set cruising RPM at 2100. I am also guessing that is why they didn't do it to the manual Fits, it is too dangerous to require someone to downshift to 5th gear to have any passing power (IF 6th gear manual = "6th" gear CVT, or highest ratio, which it isnt). Instead they keep RPM up in 6th gear, which gives you passing power in 6th without a gear shift.

note, just realized i dont know if the manual is a 6 speed, is it?

Of course you wouldn't want to claim the right of way when you aren't entitled to it. What is truly depressing is that so many people are clueless about which car actually has the right of way.
Yes, way too many drivers are clueless about way too many rules of the road.

I'll keep the hand signals idea in mind.

Visibility is great, but it doesn't do squat if you can't accelerate to get out of the way. The amount of power could be better, but power delivery in the CVT results in a disturbing lag time between pedal push and actually moving. From 65MPH, trying to accelerate to 75 quickly by mashing the pedal, the car feels like it stalls out for a second or so as it tries to find the right gear/ratio/rpm. I guess if you expect the lag then you would get used to it. It's possible the manual Fits wont feel this way because they cruise at a higher RPM, and are much closer to the powerband for passing power. At 65MPH the CVT hovers around 2100 RPM, well out of the powerband. Even if the transmission makes perfect choices it takes time for the engine to get back into the powerband, resulting in that stalling feeling (coupled with the transmission dropping "gears"). All other cars I've owned until now had enough power on tap at cruising speed to make sudden speed maneuvers.
Glad you haven't been intimidated, Bigbadvoodooguru. If I ever were to get a Fit, I would get the automatic, so it's good to know about the power issues. Thanks.

Tailgaters suck ... whether I'm in my truck OR the FIT. Sometimes slowing down works and they just pass you. Sometimes I'll turn off or pull over rather than participate in a game of fuk-fuk.

Am used to driving 4x4 trucks and the FIT is the smallest vehicle I've ever driven. I have no confidence issues nor do I feel intimidated driving the FIT. It's a very sound. stable, responsive little car that actually feels much more substantial than it looks.

As others have stated it's important to drive defensively ... and don't do unto others what you don't want them to do unto you (or something like that)
Thanks for the tips, cheese whiz. Great to know someone who drives much larger vehicles has no confidence issues and that the Fit feels much more substantial than it looks.

Heh-heh. Yep; the golden rule is always a good one to keep in mind on the highway!

Yup, I'm sure people are like what little car is that moving that fast!?

I'm usually very responsible on the road though, especially here in the NY/NJ area where it's so damn congested. Once and a while I like to drive fast but the moment has to call for it and its how you do it.

Cars that swerve in and out of traffic, never use signals even when they are driving fast, riding the shoulder to beat traffic, driving in exit lanes to grab spots in traffic. I can't stand any of that on the road. To me, this type of driving is more dangerous than just speeding.

And your right, the state must be raking in so much dough. Saw Mill, Sprain, Taconic, I-87, I-287, I-95, are all big money makers. The Sprain Brook has the most speeding in my opinion. When I used to drive home to Mount Vernon from Elmsford, it would be a daily raceway.

They took me to the hospital on a board. I had a migraine that my nurse sister thought was a brain bleed. This required another trip to the emergency room where I lay down on the cool tile floor and screamed until they turned off the tv.
It was in a ' 06 Toyota Tundra crew cab-ouch.
The kid did call and apologize.
Be safe and stay out of the way.

Jeebus. Very sorry to hear that! You would have thought the other driver would have taken the worst of the collision with a Toyota Tundra. Nice that the kid called and apologized, at least.

Yeah, the Sprain is really dangerous at times. People treat it as if it's the freaking Autobahn.

This tailgate business is a tough one because I come up on MANY drivers who are driving either in some kind of coma, on the phone, texting, or driving too slow and feel like they are on the road to make others their driving slow bitch. It's not up to slow drivers to make everyone behind them pay for it. The road is not only your road, it is a shared road. Drive appropriately or simply get out of the way and let others go. For example, do not clog up the left lanes going slowly and become annoyed when others want you out. Do not drive in the right lane where traffic is entering and exiting and YOU are just there going straight. You're choosing the wrong lane at that point. I see that time and time again. Excessively slow drivers are usually poor drivers, ime.

As much as I don't like to be tailgated, I remember that sometimes I'm in an emergency situation and need to get somewhere in a hurry while slow drivers have some kind of dopey point to prove by harassing you with slow speeds. So, when I'm tailgated I move the heck out of the way. I either say to myself, I'm going at or over the speed limit so go ahead of me and get a ticket. Or, I really know I'm in slow mode for whatever reason and I let people go ahead of me. But there are plenty of times the driver in front of you CAUSES the long line of cars behind them to crawl along, and then they get high and mighty about making you their bitch. Not cool either folks. Drive responsibly- it goes both ways.

I wouldn't say I'm intimidated while on the drive, but I did say I feel intimidated when parked.

Today while putting gas in my Fit, a VW SUV parked in front of me to get gas. While putting the numbers into Fuelly, I felt my poor Fit nudge and saw that the driver was still inching up. I mean, really? How close must another driver get to another car to poor gas into their own car? I yelled at the guy that his bumper is in contact with my bumper, and he has the nerve to ask me "too close?"

Sometimes I swear elderly people shouldn't be driving around in big cars but that's ageism and then we go into a whole "ethics" discussion. Grr.

You allow yourself to be intimidated, there is nothing to fear but fear itself, maybe driving a small car makes you more afraid but there's really no reason for it. 90% of the time if you don't back down people will get the hint and move on to the next guy to try regardless of what car or truck they're driving.

For the other 10% of the time it's not worth it because they have a death wish I'm not THAT crazy just a little bit.
