Brief rasp and rattle during start in cold weather: starter motor release issue?
I'm pretty sure all canister oil filters have some sort of an ADBV. The way the filter is mounted in the Accord doesn't allow the oil to drain out. I think it has something more to do with the proper oil pressure being available at start up that may make all the difference in the filter.
Hmmm. I can do that with my push button start by keeping my foot off the brake when I hit the button. Despite having some temps in the teens and twenties, I've yet to have the rattle happen so far this Winter (heard it off and on all last Winter).
Will give that a try to see if it makes any difference.

Did more research on this issue. Issue goes back all the way back to 2008 with Accords and Honda 2.4l engines. The VTC actuator is the culprit. The main problem is Honda has not released a FIX yet. You can replace the actuator at the dealer if you are able to reproduce the issue but the rattle/grinding will probably come back again. It has happened to people where the issue comes back in 3 months or less. At this point, the only thing people recommend is to set the key to ignition, wait, key to OFF wait, Key to ignition again and then start up. The 2008 Accords with this issue are still running fine from what i have gathered so I speculate this issue is not causing serious damage to the engine. There is only one report of complete engine failure due to this issue so far. I am just hoping if my engine does fail that it fails before warranty expires lol.
2015 Fit LX with 15, 000 miles - Add me to the list of owners with this problem. I'll talk to the dealer about it when I go in to have my recalled ignition coils replaced. However, a review of the hundreds of complaints about the same problem with the 08-12 Accord and the 07-012 CRV suggests that no satisfactory solution is available. I'd hoped to keep this car as long as my previous '03 Civic Si but I don't think that's likely. My first disappointing Honda.
Mine's done it a couple times.. buying filter at dealer.. asked service adviser.. immediate response.. "Oh.. not a big deal.. they're working on it.. VTC noise.. don't hurt anything at all.. don't have solution"...
Then he asks if I have a CRV... told him a 2015 Fit and it was like "oh.. haven't herd of that.. it's probably the same thing..don't worry about it..."

There are 4 places where you can turn the key - 0 I II III - which one corresponds to ignition and OFF?
Filter issue
When I took my GK Fit into the dealer for this start-up rattle noise last winter, Honda headquarters advised the dealer that it was due to my using a non-Honda filter. I was using a Wix filter. Then it warmed up before I could get an OEM filter installed. This winter I have the OEM filter, and the noise is still occurring, but less frequently (a couple times a week). I'm using Mobile 1, 20w0, the recommended weight oil.
It's been in the teens and single digits here in Iowa. The noise doesn't occur above about 24 deg. F. I am certain the dealer will not be able to duplicate the noise, so there's little point in taking it in. I have read elsewhere that this noise is likely due to the VTC (valve timing thingy; not sure) losing it oil prime. Someone else suggested it might be the timing chain tensioner losing its oil prime (earlier in this thread). Either way, it is worrisome. What will happen down the road when the warranty has run out? If this noise is an indicator of an early engine failure, will Honda cover it out of warranty since I have reported it to the dealer? If this noise is a non-issue, I wish Honda would just admit the noise happens (it clearly does) and tell us not to worry about it. I could live with that.
As a side note, my research on the web revealed that there is an old and a new version of the OEM oil filter for the Fit. Opinion online was that the old one was better than the new one (based on an inspection of the internals of the two filters). So I bought a box of the old model of the filter rather than the new one. I don't know if this is relevant. Both are recommended by Honda for this model. If Honda now claims that the newer, less well-built filter must be used, I will be very cranky. Plus, my front bumper's beginning to sag. Sigh.

Didn't read through all the responses because I'm at work, but I had/have this issue too. First, it started over the winter when it was below 20 degrees (like you guys had noticed). Then it slowly started happening again over the summer until it was almost every cold start. Took it in, and dealer replaced the VTEC actuator under warranty in September.
Fast forward to last week. It was sub-zero temps with -20 and -30 wind chills. Started hearing it again if the car was dead cold (meaning it hadn't been run in 4+ hours) after sitting outside (usually in a heated garage, so at least 35 degrees). Mentioned to dealer at last oil change, but it was too warm to replicate it. This was within 300 miles of my warranty expiring, so they documented it and asked me to bring it back when it got that cold again to see if they could find it again. Part of me doesn't want it to be that cold again, but I want this issue fixed before my car is at 50,000 miles and I'm living far away from my current dealer.
Btw, I have the EX 6-speed, so push-button start.

Are you almost at 60K? This being a powertrain issue I would think that your warranty is good to 5yrs/60Kmiles.
Same issue: brief rattle on start
Add my Canadian 2015 For EX to the list of cars affected by the problem. I'm about to go for my second oil change and will add out to the list of problems to share work Honda. From what I have been reading, I expect they will either not know about it, or not do anything about it. From where I sit, there's lots of evidence that this is a real problem without a final fix. I'll report it and let the group know what they say.
Add my car to the list. I heard the rattle this morning for the second time this winter (12 degrees this morning). Only the second time I've heard it though.
Yes, I'm using a genuine Honda oil filter and Honda 0W-20 synthetic oil.

I've heard this rattle about 4 or 5 times since I've had my Fit, about a year now. 18,000 miles on it. Usually only happens in VERY cold weather, however, this morning it was about 39 outside and it did it.
I'm also using a genuine Honda oil filter and Honda 0W-20 synthetic

I have this same issue with my 2015 Fit. I thought maybe I was the only one. LOL Ugh, I've had more issues with this car than I ever had with my 15 year old Chevy S10 (which I now regret selling). Just 17 more months left on my lease. . . 17 more months.
Well, there are times I wish I'd kept my '09 Fit, but the other night I ran the VIN number of the old Fit just out of curiosity, and found out it's under recall for the Takata air bag inflators, so......
BMW had similar issue that turned out to be the material the o-rings in the advance mechanism were made out of, they would leak pressure and not adjust correctly..
Some dude came up with some Viton O-rings that fixed the issue. Even some dealers install them now. Wonder if the gismo on the honda vote works similar to Vanos on the Bimmer.. ??
