Is it just me or is 6th gear way to low?
I do love my EX 6MT too. Yes I was a little disappointed that the 6th gear was not taller than the fifth gear in the previous generations however we are only dealing with a hundred and thirty horsepower...at a higher rpm thsn most driving conditions. it could have been somewhat of a marketing decision and engineering. If 6th gear were taller, basically you cannot stay in 6th gear for very long due to the lack of horsepower in the lower band. Its a 1.5L DI motor. I doubt the CVT model stays above the manual's 6th gear ratio for very long when driving. I can imagine shifting between 5th and 6th a lot, which is cool by me but unfortunately a FIT is not an S2000. :-(
with the limited powerband . that said , my '19 is showing MPG in the mid to upper 40s on the highway . 35 MPG overall average mileage . i think the gearings' just fine .
I did put 17" wheels and taller tires on- I'll post a pic and sizes later, and it is better, but it is still the only thing I hate about this thing. I got it down to 3000 at 65, but it still bugs me when I'm on a 1000 mile bender going fast and hard. I do these road trips at least twice a year. 4th through 6th are absolutely tragic. Anyone offer a solution or different ratios? Engine/transaxle swap? Maybe a turbo civic transplantation?
I Agree with @bill bosco above, the ratios/gearing are just fine (for a city car - as that's what it was designed for).
They have 130 HP and to me there is plenty of power for a higher ratio, not sure why some think the car is underpowered.
But yes, it is a fantastic city car and can be left in an upper gear surprisingly often.
By the way, there is a YT video explaining (forgot where I found it!) how this is a deliberate move on Honda's part to "force" buyers to CVT because they get better MPGs and the man trans is designed to get lower MPGs...I don't know though because it could be just another conspiratorial YouTube video.
