New car has dirt and rust under hood. What shall I do?

Just bought a new 2015 Fit EX from dealer today. When back home, I opened the hood to have a look, and found out there are many rain spot and dirt, a nut has rust spot, one round metal looks really old. Dealer got the car from their body shop, so I highly doubt the car parts is replaced, and left the hood open in the rain for the past rainy days. I am in PA state so there is no 3 day return law. What shall I do?

Why was the car at the body shop?

They said they have limited spaces in the service center (it's true), so they put some cars in other locations. The dealer first offered me a car with 21 miles already, I refused to take it. Then the dealer drove me to their body shop, and asked me to stay outside, and he went inside to get the new car out. The car looks really dirty although with the original wrapping, but even the wrapping looked not brand new.

If it were me, I would not worry about it assuming the car is otherwise OK. The engine bay does get somewhat dirty in normal use (and damp when driving in the rain), and some parts do naturally develop a bit of surface rust that is nothing to worry about.

I would also not refuse a new car with 21 miles, for that matter, so feel free to give my opinions whatever credence you think they deserve.

Just checked, all the 4 wheels have lots of rust too! I plan to call dealer and request exchange. Any suggestions and advice?

Thanks for reply. Links are updated. Hope it works.

The blue paint on the round part is worn which shows it's been touched by some tools.

The car is built in 02/2015. Only 2 months past, and it gets many dust.

good tip

Use some Fluid Film on ends with rust and it will stop it from getting worse.

Is it normal for people buy a brand new car from dealer? I just bought it from dealer yesterday. To request exchange might be better than fix it by myself.

With regards to the brakes
Isn't that relatively normal

21 miles is not unacceptable for a new car. When I was young, I was a dealership mechanic. Part of our new car inspection procedure was to drive the car at least 10 miles to check it out.

Nothing unusual from your photos, the rust is superficial

The round thing is an engine mount, by the way. It has been touched by tools, as have all the other bolts in the car. They need to do that when they build the car. Likewise, a bit of rust on the bolt for the battery lead clamp is mostly indicative of a battery having been installed (and perhaps disconnected and reconnected once or twice for transit/storage).

Nothing you posted looks at all worrying. Brake rotors (by their composition and the fact that their surface is constantly abraded) will get a tiny bit of surface rust when sitting parked for a little while, and it's nothing to be concerned about. Your wheels are not rusty—in fact, since they're alloy wheels, they cannot rust as such. (Rust is iron oxide, and aluminum alloy wheels when corroded or oxidized form aluminum oxide, which is more of a light gray color and not at all reddish.)

Thank you all so much to let me know it's in the normal range. Now I feel comfortable and will not bother dealer with unreasonable request. Thanks again.

My Fit had 52 miles on it when I took delivery. I was only a bit concerned, but still accepted it.

My Fit had 202 miles on it at delivery. The dealer had to trade cars with another dealer to find an EX MT in white.

I used to think I was obsessive until I came in here. As my ex-wife used to say, "some of you guys would gripe if they hanged you with a new rope!"

I once bought a "new car" with 5,000 miles on it (and priced accordingly). It had been used as a demo.

I had the same situation 7 years ago when I purchased a demo model for my wife with 1200 miles on it. It was the color she wanted and there was only one left in the area in that color.
