Some soon to be owner questions

I'm finally about to purchase a 2015 Fit EX CVT White Orchid Pearl (hopefully this week before the month is over). I'll be trading in my 2004 New Beetle, putting around 6000 down, and financing the rest. I know these questions are on other threads but I unfortunately don't have enough time to scan the million helpful threads on this site!

Did you give in to buying the extended warranty with your 2015? Why/why not? If so, how long and how much was it?

Are wheel locks and splash guards good to add on? Anything else?

Is there anything I should know about the buying process?

Obviously, like everyone else, I am hoping to get it below MSRP. Hopefully the 2016 arrival and end of the month purchasing is to my advantage with buying a 2015. Dealerships don't take a 5 foot twenty something female seriously so I need to get all my facts and ideas straight before going into a negotiation!

Thanks in advance!!

I will add, wheel locks don't bother, they are easily defeated if someone wants your wheels.

I want the splash guards now. they seem like a DIY kinda of thing though if you end up wanting them later or even pretty cheap to have the dealer add late. We live on a dirt road and they will help keep the rear fenders clean of mud and dirt which will get all over the outside corner there before long.

we got the extended warranty as it was super cheap and after our last car, we wouldn't go without it for the price it was. Now the honda should be way cheaper to fix than a mini cooper but the one we had on the cooper paid for itself like 4 times over.

Ours lasts as long as we own it.

Thanks for your help! I agree, if someone really wants those wheels they're going to get them at any cost.

What were the details of your extended warranty for your Fit?

I did not get the warranty on the advice of a whole bunch of folks on a thread here about a year ago. The thought was that I could put that money aside in the unlikely event I have a large bill post-warranty.

Get the cargo tray if you can as the rug is flimsy.

It pretty much covers everything but wear items like shocks, springs, spark plugs, general maintenance things.

Nice to know about the cargo tray. I may need to look into that as well as I do feel the carpets are pretty substandard. I would really like a one piece rear floor mat as well to cover the hump.

I disagree on the wheel locks. It's true that they can be easily circumvented by someone who has already targeted your car and has the tools and temperament to get them quickly, but it certainly will deter the spur-of-the-moment impulse grab or drive-by types of theft. That said, I've heard it's becoming more common for thieves to just smash a window to get the key so people are starting to hide them.

I didn't get the extended warranty since the reason I was buying a Honda was expected reliability.

I didn't want the splash guards since they busy-up the design on the lines of the car, but my dealership put them on anyway hoping to get more money. Since it would leave holes once removed, they didnt charge me for them. Get wheel locks on the aftermarket if you want them.

Floor mat guards would probably be nice given your location; get those aftermarket as well. The Honda plastic mats are fine if you live south of the Mason Dixon, but otherwise too flimsy I'd wager.

Go in with the knowledge of surrounding Honda dealers out the door price. Be prepared to walk; stand firm with the number you want. You can speak with the online salesperson and begin a dialog without them seeing your physical appearance if you are worried about them not taking you seriously. Go ahead and get an out the door number from the online rep. It can save time with the back and forth. Print it out and bring because they will "forget" they told you that. Let them know you are buying a Fit today and don't care where you get it from. They should work to get your business. You can get finance quotes (from your bank or credit union) before going to the dealership which I wish I had done.

1. Wheel Locks = Yes
- Though if they want them bad enough they will get them. At least it will deter those who don't want them enough and rather just go find another Fit without wheel locks.

2. Splash guards = No
- I had it in my previous car, not really worth it as I live in LA, not a lot of rain/mud here, but if I do live in an area with plenty of dirt roads, I will definitely get them.

3. Extended warranty = No
- It is a Honda, they are known to be reliable and repair for Honda generally is not known to be expensive, even if they broke down.
- My last car was a 2005 Honda Accord, and I have to say, I spent less than 1k on all repairs over 10 years if you don't count oil change/tires/brakes.

1. Cargo Tray - keep things clean

Thanks for all the advice! I appreciate it a lot and everyone has great points.
Never thought I'd get help from Bach and Robert Smith when buying a car.

I guess what I'm mostly concerned about in terms of an extended warranty is the Touch Screen system in the car. I feel like if anything were to go wrong there, it would be a very expensive repair. Other than that, I know Honda has a good rep with their vehicles (anything would be better than my Volkswagen).

Does anyone know if there has been any issues noted on the touch screen over time that I would have to be worried about?

Hey we're all family here, despite our musical divergence!

About the touch screen, streaming Spotify or whatever from your phone or using the radio or a thumb drive loaded with song files doesn't seem to be a problem but there is definitely something hinky going on with the iPod connection. I have a 160GB Classic and it seems to work fine if I fire up a playlist and just let it play through. But if I start moving through the list to skip over songs, the iPod eventually will freeze and reset, though it won't happen right away. Some people say their head units reset too after only a few songs but I can't say fer sure that has happened to me. Search around and you'll find some threads on this.

Wheel Locks -> get them if you have alloy wheels. I just don't understand why my dealer installed them since I have the steel wheels. Sales guy was trying to be nice. It kind of irked me since I did not ask for them.

Extended warranty -> I am the type of guy that's very nice, and of course, with nice guys, sales people tend to try to shove stuff down the sales pipe as much as they can.

After 45min of my sitting there quietly and listening to all the "benefits" of extended warranty, I politely declined. In fact, I politely told the sales staff that I am not interested in extended warranty whatsoever, but they insisted on taking me in to tell me about it, so I said, well, let's go for the ride, but I won't budge my decision no matter what. So I declined a $2500 warranty package, and bought the car for MSRP.

When in the sales room, it feels too much "too good to be true" with regards to these warranty things. When the hammer hits the nail and the warranty should be honored, it becomes a completely different ball game.

Of course, if your car is a fully loaded model unlike my DX, then maybe it's worth getting it. Just my 2 cents.

Wheel locks: Not necessary, at least not for me. My car is garaged overnite and the parking lot at work is pretty safe. I don't travel to the areas where wheel theft is more of a concern.

Splash guards: Nope. There are no dirt or gravel roads where I drive. And I'd be worried what all the road salt here would do once it worked its way into the mounting holes or in between the guards and the wheel well.

Extended warranty: I never get them and can't think of one instance where it would have paid off if I did.

Buying process: As was mentioned earlier, I suggest you email the internet sales dept of several dealerships and explain exactly what model, options, color, etc you want, tell them when you plan on buying it and ask for their best price. Ask what document fees or other fees they charge so you can compare apples to apples. Also make them aware that you are contacting several dealerships.

Good luck, I know the buying process can sometimes be very stressful and not much fun.

Talking

Thanks for the help everyone.

I said no to the extended warranty, the dealer added splash guards in (living in Northeast PA = rock salt everywhere), and I paid to get the wheel locks just because.

My OTD price with the splash guards, wheel locks, destination, and everything else included came to $19,257. Maybe not the best deal, but I was too tired of negotiating by that point.

They're cleaning it up and I'll be picking up my 2015 Honda Fit EX in White Orchid Pearl tomorrow morning!!! Thanks again. :thumb ups:

> extended warranty...

The Fits I saw have a 7-year/100k mile limited powertrain warranty. The rest of the car had a 3-year /36k mile warranty. I can't imagine the need to extend that.

That would be interesting dance Honda's own site states 5/60 for the limited power train warranty. Perhaps your dealer offers something extra for free? I know a dealer about an hour from here offers a LIFETIME power train warranty due to bring some kind of "presidents award" dealer...
