ATTN 6MT Drivers – Odd Noise in 1st?

Hey guys. Over the past couple of weeks I've noticed an odd noise coming from the font end when accelerating from full stop into 1st. It's kind of creaky. You could describe it as a rattle, but it has more of a snappy kind sound.

It only does this when the car is actually launching forward in motion and not when I'm just revving the engine at a stop. It does this during the transition of pedal down and clutch out into 1st. It's most pronounced when launching strait, but I've also heard it slightly when making right and left turns from a stop.

To be clear, I can minimize this noise by engaging slowly, but I don't want to (nor should I have to) sacrifice being able to take off quickly because my ride will make janky noises.

Maybe this noise has been there all along and I'm just now noticing it, so that's where you guys come in. Windows up, no stereo. Listen for it.

I've got an appointment tomorrow morning at the dealership, but thought I'd hit the boards to get some insight from you guys. If any of you (especially the more shop-savvy of you) have an idea as to what it could be, please chime in. Any other 6MT drivers notice this sound?

Yes! For the first 5k miles I had this exact noise in first gear particularly on hills, and a squeaky clutch pedal, but in the last 3k or so miles they have either disappeared or I can't hear them for some reason. 6MT LX

I've heard it too on occasion, but not often enough to remember quite what conditions cause it.

I have heard this and it's almost all the time unless I accelerate very slowly into 1st.

Well it makes me feel a little better that other people have experienced it, but it doesn't mean it's not bothersome. I'm particularly sensitive to auditory issues. If anyone needs help identifying the noise, I have a good recording of it and I think it's loudest at 18 seconds:

If it turns out this is a common characteristic of our economy car, I can live with it. Its really only audible in a silent cabin with all the windows up.

Still though, does anybody have an idea what's generating this noise?

Took it in. Service rep told me this sound is not only characteristic of my car, but of other current model Hondas too. He said the same noise is even more prominent in the Accord due to a thin firewall.

He seemed to think it's from the normal movement of components when lunging forward under full load. I still don't know what exactly it could be and I'm sure he doesn't really either.

The fact that it's a common characteristic puts my mind at ease, I'll just have to learn to deal. Like I said, it's only audible in a quiet, sealed cabin. Service rep told me to come back if it gets any louder.

To me you could almost mistake it as an exhaust noise. I wonder if it's just the transmission shifting on the mount or something like that.

I'm pretty sure the Service rep was suggesting it's something like this.

I have it and also thought it was exhaust noise. It's a ting, ting, ting, ting, ting...noise. I thought maybe the front tire is picking up debris (sand?) from the road and it's hitting the exhaust??? It's can only be heard at slow speeds. Whatever it is it's not effecting the performance of the car.

your noise does not sound bad at all. i have a odd clicking when letting out the clutch in first gear, but my transmission was out once already during the first 48 hours of owning the car, so who knows what they f'd up.

i plan to have them take a look at when i go in for the coil recall.

I have a sort of rattley sound when letting my clutch out in 1st too. It was really concerning at first, but I don't really notice anymore. I haven't had any performance issues, slip, or stall (yet...knock on wood).

I've never heard anything that seems even remotely alarming. I get odd noises on occasion and I've always traced them to somewhere in the interior ... that tray over the spare squeaks sometimes seemingly at random, and I hear various other pops, clicks and cracking sounds from seats or around the wheel humps. Sometimes I get weird wind noise too.

It's good to turn off the audio sometimes and just listen to your car. I once had a '85 Volvo GL (4M w/OD) without a radio and driving that car was kind of a zen experience, very peaceful.

Ok so I don't think what I am hearing is from heat because it stops as soon as the car stops. If it was the exhaust expanding or contracting from heat it would continue even if the car is not moving.

I still think it's from the tires picking up debris and throwing it onto the exhaust on the passenger side. I'm guessing that at slow speeds (first/second gear parking lot cruise for example) the angle of the debris comes off the tires is at the right angle to hit the exhaust. That is the only explanation I can come up with. When I go faster the noise stops. I have the Firestone tires.

Edit: and just tested it in reverse around a parking lot. The noise is not there while driving in reverse. Go forward and it starts again. Just cruise around a parking lot with the windows down at around 10 mph or lower. Unless I am going insane or your area is way cleaner than mine you all should here this.

I have the same sound. Started about 2 months ago. I thought it was my springs creaking at the start of movement but had suspicions it might be a tranny issue. I've had some first gear issues with my car since I took delivery. At times I can't put it in first gear from standing start. I either have to double clutch or just put it in neutral then first. I also started to hear gear spin noise at startup. I'm only at 9800 miles so I'll eventually take it in. This is the kind of thing that requires the car to be left over night and full day so they can try to recreate the problems. If the can't then they won't do anything. So I prefer for tranny to just break before 36k and have the warranty replace it.

I never had this noise on mine. I've listened to your recording WagovanMan and it sounds dreadful. 47k miles on my car. Hopefully I will never get it.

If your car has the woven flex joint in the exhaust it can make some very strange noises as it flexes.

Exhaust system support bushings squeak sometimes..

Sometimes I notice something like that, it sounds almost like wire cable stretching, doesn't seem to have affected anything after over a year..
