Maintenance Minder Questions

Hello! I plan on doing my first oil and filter change at around 5750 miles (30%) for my 2016 Fit LX.

I understand that based on the maintenance minder's calculations, the display code for a filter change does not appear until around the second oil change. My question is, if I change the filter when I do my first oil change, does that mess with the future calculations of the maintenance minder?

I am concerned that the maintenance minder will assume its calculations thinking it is still using the old filter I bought the car with.

Am I being paranoid? lol

Um, yea maybe.

Changing the oil filter along with the oil won't change how the minder calculates the next service interval.

Our service department always changes the oil filter as part of the oil change, it's extremely rare that someone doesn't want it done this way.

The minder system is only based upon a model. The system has no clue what is actually done to the car, nor can it actually sample the conditions of anything in the car, be it oil and filter, air filters, trans fluid, etc.
The system depends on correct specified products being used. If someone dumps in the cheapest crude straight 50W oil from the corner store, the system has no way to discern that it is not right for the engine.

It isn't as simple as a mileage counter and idiot light......It works on a similar principle but it is much more variable and flexible than a plain counter.

Any reason you're doing it at 30% versus 15%?

The onboard computer system in your vehicle continuously monitors the engine operating conditions such as speed, engine and ambient temperature, time and the vehicle use. The system will count down the vehicles oil life based on these conditions to determine when an engine oil change and maintenance is necessary. The computer does not recognize whether you changed the filter or not. It does not recognized the actual quality of the oil.

In my old BMW it is less sophisticated. The oil changing minder (when you need to change the oil) is based on the number of gallon of gasoline that went past a sensor, nothing complicated like taking actual samples and measure its quality. So, if you drive easily, get high gas mileage, your minder will be different from one who drives the car like it was on a race course.
