Subconscious fueling
Subconscious fueling
I may have accidentally forgot to turn off my car before fueling
lol...
One of two things happened.
EITHER:
1. I really did turn off my car before fueling and subconsciously turned it back on without realizing it.
or
2. I really did leave the car on while fueling.
I was on the phone while fueling, so I wasn't truly focused on everything happening -_- . I finished the phone call in my car, then realized that the car was on. I couldn't remember for the life of me if I actually did turn it off then back on..
Would the check engine light pop up if I did fuel it with the engine on?
Also, is there any possibility of damage if I did fuel it with the engine on?

it might ... if the cap was off and the car was running, it def could throw a CEL. But it should go off after another five or so startups. You could always go to an AutoZone and have them read the CEL code too.

Gas stations have signs telling you not to use your cell phone while pumping gas. Overly safety concern? Maybe not...
A college student was pumping gas into his sports utility vehicle near New Paltz, N.Y., recently when he flipped open his cell phone to answer a call, and suddenly found himself surrounded by flames.
"The next thing you know, he said, he saw this big ball of fire," New Paltz Fire Chief Patrick Koch said. A worker triggered the emergency fire suppression system, which put out the fire, and SUNY New Paltz student Matthew Erhorn received only minor burns, though his phone was charred by the flames.
Firefighters concluded Erhorn's cell phone ignited vapors coming from the car's fuel tank as it was being filled.

It's pretty much impossible for a phone to start a fire while fueling; there's little if anything that could cause a spark or get hot enough to ignite gas vapors. The distraction from talking on the phone is plenty reason enough to avoid doing so while pumping gas.
I would venture to guess that a static electric spark, maybe caused by sliding across the seat to get the phone, was more likely the cause of fire, or else it was completely unrelated but at the same time as the phone being flipped. That said, I'm not a fire investigator, much less one investigating the fire referred to.
I have personally experienced a gas pump shut-off not working properly once. Had I not been there paying attention, it would have been a big puddle of gas on and around my Fit rather than a small dribble down the side.

In Some Galaxies.......
Well since we have had reports of some smart phones catching fire themselves, I'm going to say the possibility exists however remote.
