A New Computer or a Key

Although it's nice to have keyless entry and starting, paying $350 for a new key borders on the criminal. In the past, I've always had lots of keys for my cars. Now I have just two. I just got an email from Amazon about a Lenovo computer. I can get a 20"all-in-one refurbished desktop for $305, yet a key for my Fit would cost more than that. Criminal!

Yes, it is. My son and I have misplaced them for a couple of days, but they always turn up. One advantage of keyless entry is being able to leave it in my pocket all the time.

Right, but the tile is almost as big as the key. I'll consider that, though. Isn't there a separate locator piece that I would be able to lose easily?

Maybe different models work differently, but this one beeps when I'm close to it. That's not good enough. The app will tell me "its last location" I want to know its current location. I'll keep looking and reading about these things.

That's always my fear - washing the key fob.

When my Samsung S4 died recently, I got a new Samsung Galaxy J3 for about $65. We've been using TracFone here, so it was an easy replacement. We have averaged $26.50 a month for the past year with two Samsung smart phones. Compare that to the $165 a month we were paying Verizon.

That is painful!

Are the smart keys like the old ones where, if you have one that is working, you can program a second yourself?

Nope! I had a couple of Fords, and I could program the key by turning the key on and off in a certain sequence. Honda and Nissan - and others - make you pay the dealer.

That's an unfortunate change. Our Honda transmitter/fob style can be programmed with the key/door lock sequence similar to a Ford. I have both.

I'm sure the guy who thought of charging customers to get their keys programmed got a healthy bonus.

That's why I hung up key hooks by the door. As soon as I come in, key gets hung up. Can't say I can get the wife to do the same as I'm always looking for the keys for her vehicle.

Yes, those hooks by the door come in handy, but now we don't need them for the cars. I got a good idea from a neighbor. He has a small, metal lockable key box. He hangs copies of all his keys there, with a label attached to each key.

We have something similar to that at work. It's not super sturdy so make sure it's somewhere secure. A small crowbar and you can get into it in a matter of minutes. I only say that since you mention it's lockable.

Right. Although it's lockable, ours isn't for security, just convenience.
