GK to remain 2020 Fit in US market

"The Honda Fit, or Jazz in other markets, has been one of the most talked-about cars during the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show. That's because of its quirky and unexpectedly different styling; a huge departure from its predecessor that has become widely popular around the world.

Now, if you're among those who despise the new design and you're planning to get one of this subcompact hatchback, Honda has announced something that might brighten up your day. The 2020MY Fit will retain its current styling. So, the same sporty-looking hatchback that has been around since 2014 – and that would be good news for some.

The 2020 Honda Fit will, of course, get the same 1.5L i-VTEC gasoline mill of the current one, which is either mated to a 6-speed manual or a CVT.

Price range for the 2020 Fit starts at $17,120 for the manual LX trim (includes $920 destination charge) and ceilings at $21,550 for the EX-L variant."

Great news, IMO, for next year's Fit buyers!!!!

The website reports that the Fit will be made in Mexico. Has damage from the flood been repaired, and the factory/factories are ready to begin production anew?

The flood is ancient news. They've been making Fits in the Mexico plant all year. That's where the 2019 models have been coming from.

Ahh, I did not remember they opened back up for business. Thank you for reminding me.

The Fit doesn't sell well compared to the Civic and Accord (never mind the CR-V and HR-V).

I wonder whether they'll try to do something to change that.

The Fit might sell better if Honda was actually able to deliver the car to
market. The GK was nearly a year late being introduced, then production was moved back to Japan, then back to Mexico in time for the factory to be shut down for almost all of ‘18 due to a flood.

I see lots of Fits in my area and the few my local dealer get are sold as soon as they hit the lot, but it’s hard to sell a car you can’t reliably deliver.

In fairness, the American public has largely moved up to SUVs and trucks and simply aren't very interested in subcompacts. The domestic makers, Ford and the like, have outright cancelled production of many of their cars and are focused on the big money makers. In this environment of cheap gas and big vehicles there is no chance of the Fit becoming more popular than it is. Even if the price of gas was to soar in the next few years and the public was to abandon their big vehicles would they move down to smaller gas driven cars or would they switch to electric? The Fit may stay alive because of its popularity in Asia and S. America and the like, but it's hard to be optimistic about its future here.

Not a fan of the styling. R&T says it's a 4th gen. FWIW. Looks like it too. The A pillar is much thinner (major blind spot for me)

The 2020 Fit sold in the US will just be carried over from last year. In other words it will be the 3rd generation model.

Looking forward to specifications for the two motor hybrid, even if it won’t arrive in the States for another year.

Not particularly excited about this announcement.
I'm just not sure this isn't just a temporary stay of execution for the regular ICE Fit. My opinion, but if Honda was at all committed to a real continuation of the ICE "regular" Fit line? It would be time for a refresh, and a new Gen. And not the rather extreme version that we've seen, promoted as the "next" Fit.
But I suppose it's better than Honda announcing they aren't going to be available at all.

But at least locally where I live, the Honda Dealerships BARELY promote Honda Fits. All the commercials show every other Honda product except the Fit. If you were a newbie, not familiar with the product, you wouldn't even know Honda sold a sub-compact hatchback going by their own promotion.

Maybe the future for the Fit will surprise me in a pleasant way. But as a regular ICE Fit owner, knowing 1 more model year, simply carried over isn't particularly uplifting news. In North America it seems clear Honda would rather sell me just about anything else.

That might very well be!

Celaya probably got a reprieve when rumors of the new North American trade deal started slipping out.

For most manufacturers, the labour relations goals are an odious modification. But Honda is in a better position to comply, and the other provisions are acceptable.

There is a good chance we will see the fourth generation Fit next year, now that they know that retooling Celaya is worth the doing.

Almost missed this:

"As Car and Driver points out, sales of the current Fit are down 17 percent in the US this year, and Honda recently moved US-market Fit production to Japan to make room in one of its Mexican plants to build more HR-V crossovers."

https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a2...new-honda-fit/

So it looks like the 2020 Fits will be coming from Japan (hurrah!) again and the Mexico plants will strictly be making HR-Vs.

So there will be no more manual transmission Fits, just like when they moved production to Japan in 2016.

I don't recall MTs being discontinued when Fit production was moved to Japan a couple years ago and as far as I know - and I believe I read it somewhere - MTs will continue to be available in 2020.

The few manuals that were produced in '16 (and I mean VERY few) were produced in Mexico. Japan only made CVT Fits for the US market.

As for the 4th Gen Fit coming here, we will have to wait and see. If Honda is true to form, the Fit will debut in Asia first and come here for the '21 model year. Just like what happened with the GE and the GK.

I actually like the looks of the 4th Gen Fit. Keep in mind if it DOES come here it will look a bit different, as it will have extended bumpers to meet US impact requirements.

I said the same thing about the GE and GK when I first saw them too. I expect the styling will grow on me.

Bull.

I give up. Google it, the numbers are way up. Nothing will paste, and typing the links is futile. I've tried three times for two sites.

The Fit has sold way more in the US in 2019 than last year.

It's not that hard. This is from Honda's site: https://hondanews.com/en-US/channels/corporate-sales

I just clicked a few months but the 2019 versus 2018 monthly numbers were all a %loss for the Fit. YTD sales are down 5% compared to November of last year.

I never liked the GK, I always thought the "Starsky and Hutch" curve from the back to front was weird. So what did I buy? Yes a 2016, and now the look really grew on me. I also had a 2015 Civic and when I saw the 2016 I was like "fugly", now I think the new gen Civic is awesome(had one as a loaner a couple weeks back). So we shall see if the new Fit comes to the U.S. I like my 2008 CRV look better than the 2012-2015 with the ugly front grille and lights... But those new 2020 CRV's hellllll yes!!!!
