Car won't move when I press gas peddle

I have a Honda fit DBA-GD1 2006 automatic. It's been fine but recently I could hear a bang like sound when I accelerate once I have passed bumps or slowed down.
The other day I had used it the whole day then in the evening it couldn't move when I press on the gas. It went for a short distance then failed completely. The D keeps on flashing and it does not reverse to both R and D.
I bought it second hand and did not change the CVT fluid. I guess it's been used for sometime. My mechanic says we change it and he cleans up the filters and we see how it responds. Could this work?
From my research I've seen a faulty torque converter could cause this problems. Can that be repaired? Also would revitalizant help?
Please someone advise
