Does anyone have experience with "clicking" when starting/stopping?

When I put my 07 Fit GD3 (manual transmission) in 1st gear and start rolling forward, I hear a "click"... sounds like it's from the front driver's wheel area. Same "click" just about when I've come to a complete stop. A local shop referred by a friend did a test drive (didn't look under the car at all...) and said "it's a bearing going out in the transmission" and referred me to a transmission specialist.

Additional facts: driver's side brake caliper bolts seem snug, driver's side CV boots don't appear torn, clicking noise does not occur when turning (ruling out outer CV joint failure), 240k miles on car. I'm original owner & stay on top of maintenance (30,000 mil trans fluid changes). Motor & trans mounts were replaced about 80k-90k miles ago. Original drive half-shafts.

I'm hoping it's NOT that the transmission needs to be rebuilt but that it's something easier and cheaper like a drive axle's inner CV joint wearing out... How does one diagnose a bad inner CV joint?

Brake pads moving in the caliper bracket?

 

I ended up taking the car to my local Honda dealer, and that's what they concluded... that the pad brackets were just wearing, and when the car is cold, the pads move a little, and when the brakes warm up the brackets and fittings expand a little and the pad movement goes away. The Honda tech jumped in the car and diagnosed this immediately; "I see this all the time with Honda brakes..." he said. Works for me... I'll go with that.

Knock on wood my transmission and CVs are happy and will have many years of faithful service to come!
