Another Pothole

I got a call from my son last night - another tire killed by a pothole. I got a regular tire from the shed and went in and put it on. You'd think the geniuses at Honda would come up with a better crank arrangement for the jack. Today, I'll remove the remaining snow tires and put his new tires on. I've never lost a tire to a pothole, but this is number four for my son.

Tell your son to stop hitting those potholes, unless you like fixing his tires.

Hold on! Let me write that down!

hen a pothole is filled with water, it disappears. All of these situations involved holes filled with water.

I kept some of the jacks from cars I scrapped over the years. They were the same basic design but better made than what I was getting on new cars so I would swap them and continue to use the old jack and toss the new one.

But that raises the question what are you doing changing tires for him? His car his tires, his problem to fix. Maybe he'll learn to be a little more careful with potholes if he's responsible for the repair.

What size wheels are you running?

There could be a hundred reasons why I changed his tire. Does it really matter why? In this case, he was on a dinner break from work so he was wearing his good clothes, not his "mechanic's clothes." Going back to work filthy wouldn't have been a good idea. Aside from that, he didn't have that little donut spare tire because I had removed it. I was doing some work in that area, and I hadn't replaced it.

Not sure what size rims he's running but in winter I size down to 15" steel. Last year I destroyed a nice set of after market magnesium rims after hitting enough potholes to bend the rims. I find the extra air space offered by smaller rims makes a big difference. It's also much nicer when you do hit one. Oh so cushy. Also I avoid all puddles like they are potholes. You never know what's hiding under all that. Once saw someone get the entire wheel and control arm ripped out after hitting what I assume must have been a huge pothole hiding under a puddle.

Oh I too would appreciate a nicer jack from Honda. I'm probably in the minority but I switch tires using the OEM jack and it's certainly a workout.

If they had included a folding crankable handle, that would have been great. At home, I use a large floor jack with a hockey puck to fit on the jacking point.

I had a tire blowout after hitting a pothole. I've since switched to 205/50/16s on my EX and so far so good. On my second set of 205/50.

We have some extreme potholes here. There are thousands of small ones which most local drivers know to drive around. There are also some deep tire-killers that he will hopefully avoid.

The problem is the "repair." They send some guys out to shovel blacktop into the hole. That starts deteriorating as soon as they drive to the next pothole.

I don't recall if his car had the smaller wheels. We had them on something at one time.

Rubbing more dirt into your cause. I have never had to change a flat on the Fit from driving in some of Houston's infamous bad roads, which I avoid most of the time. So, I'm thinking of reducing more weight (removed rear seats saved 65 lbs) by removing the spare and the tools too.
