Waiting for the US Fit
Waiting for the US Fit
I am glad to see the Fit coming to the US. I looked at the Mazda 5 but was not impressed with the gas mileage. No difference than my 98 CRV.
I have a 96 Accord and the 98 CRV. The CRV gets all the driving. I have 175,000 miles and cannot believe that with that mileage it does not use oil between oil changes or leak any fluids. I still have the original brakes. I think I should get 200,000 miles off the break pads.
I am envious that the other countries had the Fit/Jazz. Glad to see Honda offer a mini for the US. I had a Ford Festiva, 1988. Loved it for fuel economy and general utility. My best in the Festiva was 52 mpg but I generally averaged 45 - 48 mpg.
I was at our Honda dealer on Wednesday and he thought the Fit might be in Texas in mid to late February. They did not receive any advanced literature yet.
Question: I am 6 foot tall, how is the leg room for the driver in the Fit. Is the seating more upright with a taller seat. I don't like my Accord because you are sitting on the floor.
Great forum. I think the Fit with aftermarket parts could really catch on.
I was thinking of an Element but I will wait for the Fit. I like the better fuel mileage now that gas is going up in price here in the US.

I'm 6 foot 3. Seat is high up because fuel tank located in the middle of the car under the floor but still heaps of head and leg room. I can't fit comfortably in alot of bigger cars but the Jazz is no problem. A sunroof would reduce the headroom though.

I was a non-honda person, I had an older VW passat (1992) until this past spring when my wife and I decided we needed a newer car to last us a while. we ended up getting an Element and I love it. the size is just right for us, but yer right the fuel economy down right SUCKS. I've averaged 23MPG over the last 10,300 miles most all of it on the highway. (the passat was getting 32MPG). Even so it's a great family car.
Now, I'm definately looking forward to the fit, since I drive 60miles/day I need a good small commuter to replace my 84 Mercedes 300D. I love my benz, but it's wayyyy to big. I have to do some fancy 500point turn to squeeze it into my assigned parking spot at work. even so the ass end hangs out. I've actually been taking the element most days now just because it's super eazy to park
Fit
I had been looking at the Element for the last few years. I would get one if the gas prices stayed down but from I am being told by folks in the oil industry gas will continue to climb. With that I decided the Fit would be what I need. We do a lot of driving back and forth to the coast, 170 miles each way besides going to Houston every once and a while. The close to 50 mpg sounds appealing.
I love my Honda CRV but it is approaching 200,000 miles. At 26 mpg and no car payment it is affordable.
I was curious to ask some of the Fit owners if it has any towing capability. I would like to know if it could pull a lightweight trailer with up to about 500 lbs payload. I would like a way to get items back form Home Depot or Lowes.
I hope they put cruise control on the American version. I saw that overseas it is not an option.
Any ideas on when they hit the states and cost?
Our Honda dealer knows it is coming but the saleman did not know exactly when.

Welcome to the U.S. Fit guessing game - my dealer is still insisting that it's not going to be the 5 door but the sedan (city) version of Fit that hits our shores.
Anybody's guess is good until good old "wait till the last minute" Honda coughs up details in the spring.
