looking for car with good fuel economy

I have a family of 5 three small girls. I am looking for a car that will transport us all in comfort and has good fuel economy. It sounds like the fit may be the right fit for me. I would like to see a diesel come to the U S. Now is the time to introduce a diesel fit to the U.S.

I have a Fit that I bought in May. I have 5 year old twin boys that have to be in booster seats and a grand-daughter that is in a car seat. I can get them stuffed in the back seat in their car seats but I sure wouldn't want to get in an accident and get hit from the side. Because they probably wouldn't make it because it's too tight in the backseat. Also, on the gas mileage the sticker says it gets 31 city/37 highway, most of my driving is highway with a little bit of city driving and my average mpg is 28. The Honda dealer did what they said was a fuel test and they claim that my Fit gets 39 on the highway well I offered to show them my gas reciepts that show that the best mpg I got on most of my tanks of gas was 28 or lower. I can't get more than 278 to 290 on the odometer before the fuel light comes on and I need to head to the gas station. I feel like I've got a lemon on the fuel economy part. Good luck looking for a small car. I feel like I should have bought an Accord, I probably would have gotten as good of mpg as my Fit is getting and we would have had more room for the kids in the backseat.

the sticker says 31/47 on a Fit????? take a picture for me, mine said 33/38 and I steadily get 33. stop and go traffic 5 days a week in a Manual Sport. So the 33 is correct.

Fuel Economy Sticker

I apoligize for the mistake on my comment about the sticker. Mine does say 31/37 and I have only been getting 28 mpg. Most of my driving is highway with very little city. I talk to the owner of a Fit Sport that purchased his right before I got mine and he is getting almost 40mpg. I wish I could get better mpg and I have tried everything including driving like an old lady, and nothing seems to make it any better. Sorry for the misprint I will go in and edit it. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

If you drive steadily, avoid the fun part of the Fit (you know from stop lights and on the interstate above say... 60 mph), go around corners slowly, stop precisely... sounds like an old lady. Yep! And even you... may get above 25 mpg...

I thought I read about a Hybrid FIT coming next year-
that ought to get some good gas mileage.

See
http://www.hybridcars.com/honda-fit-hybrid.html
Let's see what happens.

Hybrid CIVIC new or used is good on gas and has 5 seatbelts.

Manual transmission tends to help mpg numbers.

As a second car the fit is fine for a family of 5, but if it will be your main car or only car I would look at the Accord. Those kids are going to grow and take up more room.

It would be great if Honda made an Accord station wagon (or a Civic wagon), but they would rather sell you an SUV that uses more gas.

They do make a Accord wagon , and a Civic wagon, just not in the U.S., sorta dumb if ya ask me, cause there is a market for them, just as there is for any other car.

fuel economy... riiiiggght :(

I have to precede my complaint with much love for my Fit.. I love it with the exception of a couple things: no lock on the glove box (how cheap do u need to be?); the crap they try to pass off as carpeting, absolutely SUX.. one trip home with sandy shoes has completely ruined it, even though I have tried to keep it covered up (add that to leaves that blew in and crunched under the matts). I am afraid to try to use my steam cleaner for fear this junk would either melt or fall apart. And the gas mileage, well it stinks... I have gotten nothing better than 24 mpg, city or highway... I dont carry a lot of people (2 small sons) or heavy gear, dont drive like a maniac, and the weather has not affected it for better or worse. I have read many times that the engine needs to 'break in', but I have over 7k miles on it, and nothing has improved. What a crock of junk, regarding the mileage. Geez, my husbands stinky, dirty, old and rusty 94 saturn gets 30 mpg... u would think my shiny new car could at least compete with that, but no such luck. Bummer.. but I dont hate it enough to sell it Oh, I also wish I had seen the orange color in person before I ordered my car.. I didnt see anything written about how this was not a very vivid orange, or darker (I thought it would be like the element orange, they look the same on the computer). This shade looks like a peach color on overcast days. Just a little stutter for me, because it has grown on me and I love it now, but at first was very unhappy about it.

Well, just look at the milage forum. You arent the only one. Occasionally I get decent (mid 30's) with my Fit. Overall I would say 29 mpg average. I have a 5500 lb van with a 3.8 liter V6 that can get 25 mpg on the highway with 7 adults and gear. Definately not what it is cracked up to be.

What you are looking for is a Versa SL. The back seat room alone will do it and the MPG is virtually same as Fit. Course it drives like a Buick but thats the poenalty. It costs about the same, perhaps slightly less. lots of convenient drawers, holders, etc as well as 6 didc CD.

I rented a Versa for a little while (sedan) while my Fit was in the shop. It was windy on the highway and I had difficulty keeping it in the lane. Got my Fit back and although I could feel the wind, the Fit, a smaller car, drove much better. Also -- my Fit fits in the garage; the Versa is too long. And no magic seats. As to the mileage: I have over 45,000 miles on my Fit now and with mainly highway driving (and I don't drive conservatively) I'm getting 33-35 mpg. With lots of lights for about 75% of a 50 mile commute, I get about 28-29. Maybe a long break-in period helps (?)

We are getting around 38mpg here in the uk with our's,but on the website and in the brosure it state's you can get upto 50mpg on a run so something is completely wrong with what honda is saying,i got rid of a V6 2.5l hot hatch to cut down on fuel cost's and this 1.4l jazz is not much better .

Only have 300 miles on my FIT got 36 mpg on the first tank pretty good considering it is brand new and not broken in at all. As for some of these claims like a Van with a 3.8l V6 Getting 25 mpg---highly doubt that unless he was on a decline the whole way. I've owned 20 different vehciles ranging from trucks cars vans etc. Current truck is a 2007 Toyota Taoma 2.7L inline 4 4x4 with gas mileage around 21-23 mpg. The only truck or van that would get 25 plus mpg is a 2.3L ford Ranger (so far one of the best fuel economy pickups on the market). For true MPG check this site out:

I hear you, not to worry.... Diesel is coming to save the day!

Honda is supposed to have two diesels coming out by next year, with that said you loose the convenience of your standard gas station and need to be aware of where the services for diesel fuel are available. I also don't think they will get better mileage than the Fit, the diesels that are coming are larger vehicles... if my memory serves me right the Accord and the Pilot.

I would say the most efficient diesels coming will be the next gen of VW's
