Whats the widest tire I can put on stock rims?

Whats the widest tire I can put on stock rims?
So on the stock sport we have 185 50 16's......can I increase it safely to 205 45 or 50 16's?
I have to buy tires soon and need to get an idea on if this size increase is safe for daily driving......thanks
also any brand recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

205/45x16 would work well. Tire is a tad smaller in diameter which makes up for the heavier weight of the 205.
Speedo and odo error will be about 3%, when you're actually doing 60 mph your speedo will say62.
