Lowering?? Beware...

I found out today that I have a bad bearing in the intermediate shaft assembly.

#7 in the listing below

http://www.ebay.com/itm/HONDA-44500TF0Y00-GENUINE-OEM-FACTORY-ORIGINAL-INTERMEDIATE-SHAFT-/231068047235?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item35ccba9783&vxp=mtr
I can only assume it's from aggressively lowering the car, been lowered for 4 years.

The mechanic I spoke with had only seen this bearing go bad on one other A/T Honda and that vehicle was a 92 model with over 200k miles. Just something to think about before lowering.

Lowering could cause it or it could of just gone out on its own.

Replace the bearing its 36 bucks and call it good.

I see lots of slammed cars in So Cal at my dealer and alot of the late model Civic's and Accords use intermediate shafts as well as older models. Never seen one go bad myself other than when a car has been hit or curbed hard.

My trusted mechanic said the bearing was absolutely trashed. I noticed some pulling every so often when it was binding up. Riding smoothly now that it's replaced!

I have the same problem. Honda told me warranty won't cover that.

I too havent seen many of those go bad over the years either.

Its possible that lowering it had some effect on its life but usually the axle cv joints have enough flex in them to make up the difference without any problems.

Just curious, how much are you lowered?.

About 2 inches off the ground at it's lowest. The more I think about it, being lowered compounded the effects of taking an awkward angle into my driveway. I always took it at an angle to avoid scraping and it flexed the suspension so much that I would be on 3 wheels going up.

it cannot be due to being lowered. That is just something they made up to avoid looking clueless. Sometimes shops feel the need to have an explanation ready, whether its correct or not.

I have never even heard of an intermediate bearing going out. they are held in perfect placement so the bearing never gets abuse.

My guess it was simply a defective batch when it was made at the factory.

Shit happens!! lol

I've seen issues when the axle angles are too tight create harmonics/binding that trashes bearings internal to the transmission/transaxle. Both lowered and lifted vehicles.. It happens. gonna play ya gotta pay..
