Damn. that is pretty impressive. And I thought my 44mpg avg was impressive this weekend down to San Diego.

 

It's great, ain't it? Not hard to get at least 45 mpg on the highway if you keep the speed down a bit, limit your launches and stay away from any mighty headwinds. I enjoy watching the numbers tick up on my MTE display when I'm doing long distance, so cool.

 

wow.. definitely beats the priarse (prius) cause according to my taxi driver he said he can only average 50mpg on a good day. lol

why waste more money on a econobox when u can achieve basically da same on a normal gasoline car + all da utility vs a priarse.

Where I live I'm lucky to get 35. Four hours to go 60 miles today. Record is 54.1.

I guess I got you beat. I'm averaging 17 mph driving my mom's car in Cocoa Beach/Merritt Island area. Her Altima has a display that calculates average mph which is cool but that number is just awful. Dunedin, where you live, and Cocoa Beach are both areas where hybrids really shine. If I had to live down here permanently, I'd have to trade in my Fit for a Prius C ...

 

What kinds of speeds are you guys doing to get 45+mpg? I just drove 225 miles, little wind, 40 degrees F, almost all non stop, dead flat terrain, and 55-60 mph, never over 62 mph. I got 40 mpg. I'd love to see 45+, but don't know what to do differently. 2008 MT stock. Winter tires. Dry highway.

 

When my car was newish I did a hypermiler experiment and got 54 mpg on the trip screen for a 22-mile ride. One launch to get to the expressway and never faster than 50 mph. Everyone -- and I mean EVERYONE -- passed me. I got beeped a lot, with some people waving fists and/or fingers at me. A few of them also cut it kinda close when moving back into the my lane, I guess as a way of expressing displeasure.

 

40 mpg is still a good number. It's 6 mpg over its hwy rating. Those of us with CVT's have lower rpm than a MT at highway speeds so we have the edge there. We have a 41 mpg hwy rating and can do 45+ mpg driving at 60 mph. 50+ is not unheard of under the right conditions.

 

Milder weather this weekend allowed my mileage to rise back to 41 MPG. That's with snow tires and a manual transmission. In mild weather with the all season tires 44 MPG is possible if I watch the right foot.

 

This is pretty typical for my 100km daily highway commute in the spring/summer/fall, does drop to 5.7-6.2 in the winter). Works out to about 47mpg, best I have seen is 4.3 (or 55 mpg).

 

I hit 46.8 mpg today on a 40-min highway spin going well over 60 mph most of the time. This former Prius driver was extremely impressed. What's frustrating is when I come off the highway to the surface streets and watch the mpg deflate at traffic lights since the engine keeps running. That took some getting used to after having the Prius engine shut itself off at stops.

 

very reassuring. thanks everyone. Yah, that makes sense about the CVT, I wouldn't at all have minded a taller top gear on my MT; I could give a rats about passing speed. I'm going to bring it down to top speed 55 mph on the next drive, and I'll look forward to going up to 44 mpg when I get the all seasons on in the Spring.
Kithkarnon, what speeds do you run for your commute?

 

I don't think it's the engine running as much as launching when the light turns green. The Fit is extremely greedy when accelerating from a stop and a few stoplights will really eat into your mpg numbers. In short-hop suburban traffic, I routinely see mpg in the 20s on the trip screen.

 

Yes, hitting the gas at green does that with any car, but I was specifically referring to idling at red. In the Prius, all the MPG I'd built up while moving would remain up at red lights because the engine would cut off. But when I'm idling the Fit (or any non-hybrid), the engine keeps running while I helplessly watch my hard-earned trip MPG number go down. Then I launch (which makes it go down even more), and once I have enough momentum I can let up on the gas and start building up my trip's MPG again.

 

I travel at 110kph (69mph) with, 3 stops and for 8km a 50kph (31mph) zone.

 

Yes, stop/start is on my wishlist.
