i hate dealers

so the other day, i went to my local dealer to buy another key with remote.
i just got the 2010 fit sport about a month ago from their used car sales.
i put on maybe 1k miles. car was inspected and i checked that all the fluid was full and new.
brakes was good with more than half life left. so there should not be anything needed.

when i picked up the new key and car, the service rep asked about possible atf change and soon maybe brakes.
oil life is at 90%. i did not say that the car was in their shop about 30 days ago.
i guess he was trying to sell other service that should not be needed anytime soon

and what an expensive remote key.

Not all dealers are created equal and not all people who work at dealers are great. Sounds like your local one might push service that isn't needed. Soon is kind of generic, so soon to them might be 3 years. You could go through brakes in 6 months also, not likely but some people do.

Follow the car's maintenance minder though.

The keys are ridiculously overpriced. I almost cancelled my transaction when buying my 2011 Fit in March because it came with only one key (which they did not disclose to me until signing paperwork). My assumption was that the dealer would provide me two sets of keys, even if they had to pay for the second one. In the end, I kept the car and the dealership offered to pay for the programming of the key ($100!), but not the cost of one.

As for the the quality of the service department, that varies greatly. I have been to two that were average, but the one closest to my work has been amazing. Almost as enjoyable as going to the Lexus dealer. Hopefully you will find better luck with another dealership without their salesman-ship from the service department.

$100 to program a key? Takes two minutes.

Depending on the dealership the service advisor might be a commission job. In that case they push "service" to make their check bigger. They are not your friend or looking out for your best interest in all cases

Yeah, I hate that.
You'd think dealerships/service departments would be embarrassed.
When you are looking at the vehicle from the "buying" standpoint they will tell you all about their "extensive" inspection process, and how the vehicle all checked out and is ready to go.

But after you buy it? Take it to the service department and suddenly it needs a whole lot of work.

I once bought a Honda Accord, from a Honda Dealer that had the fabled used car multi-point inspection.
Right after I purchased it, ended up at the dealership service department that told me it needed front axle work. Pretty expensive.

I complained, because I had just purchased it and could show them the "neat" print out they showed me before I bought that suggested that whole area of the car had been thoroughly inspected and passed.

I was only able to talk them into a compromise, I think they 1/2 priced the work. But it was still a rip off.

I also once put absolutely brand new tires on my vehicle, took my vehicle in for a routine oil change, and had the service adviser, show me another neat print out, with the tires all in "red", while the service adviser told me I needed new tires ASAP.
She was really embarrassed when I told her that was strange because I had just put a set of brand new tires on the vehicle.

So obviously no real inspection was done. They were just looking at previous notes and trying to up sale more purchases.

I don't get why service departments in this day and age, continue with such "snake oil" practices. But unfortunately I think it still happens at some.

i almost shot snot out of my nose mang.. waz like WTF. lol

da guy was like ' uhhhhh.. no thank u?.. '

but da service manager kept pushing him until da guy's wife came and dat waz da end of dat conversation. lol haha

although getting the key cut and programmed was relatively fast, i just hate the fact
that they have to bring up other services.
again the fit was bought from the dealer about 30 days ago.
maybe it was that i took off the dealers license plate frame.
i also have a odyssey van and parts are ridiculously more expensive for both.

thanks

Right on.

I bought our '13 Fit used from a small rural Dealer who was excellent. As we spoke, I thought to ask if he had both keys. He had only one, but happily offered to get another, which he did at no charge. He said he knew people at the Honda Dealer and could get it done on the cheap.

I like telling this story even though it does not involve a Honda Dealer. Years ago my daughter had a Blazer and both lower ball joints were badly worn. So on a Saturday she replaced both of them in my garage. When she was done she she came in my house and asked "where do you think I should go to get it aligned? I sent her to a place in town that I had never used before. We do most of out own work around here but we do not have an alignment rack. So she made an appointment with them for the following Saturday. On the following Saturday here is this young 120 pound blonde girl with a masters degree from Purdue going into the repair shop. She says "I want the front end aligned". They pull the car in on the rack and about 15 minutes later the service adviser says "We can not align your car. The ball joints are too badly worn and need to be replaced." HHe had a written quote in his hand to do the work. She says "which one needs to be replaced?" The response was "all 4". Her response was "I just replaced the 2 lowers a week ago". Their response was "Well, the work was not done. Who did the work because they lied to you." Her response was "I did it and now please pull my car out of your shop. I'll take it to a reputable repair facility. Remember this encounter the next time you try to take advantage of a young dumb blonde girl."

I had dropped off my 2013 red Fit Sport for a recall, armrest install, and a nose mask install. When I went to pick it up, I was dropped off in front of the dealership by a co-worker... right in front of a salesman. Ended up leaving with a 2019 black Fit EX, which I do love, but 1 thing I didn't like was my aftermarket stereo in the 2013 wasn't part of my trade-in deal. I wanted it back. A job I could have done myself in 5 mins, if I had known I was going to be trading it in. The dealership is trying to charge me $250 for them to put the factory stereo back in and give me the aftermarket. It's a simple plug and play swap, other than maybe a reset on the factory radio, I don't know. On top of that, they LOST my aftermarket radio and want to give me a used one off eBay. Granted my trade-in was technically used, it was used by me and I know works great.

similar to n9cv but it was the local Honda dealer........ wife goes in for an oil change which is the only "service" I have done at the dealer and that's only because they do it cheaper than I could.......... She's there about 30min when a service manager comes in with a VERY worn brake pad informing her she is in desperate need of a brake job and the car is dangerous to drive. She calls me in a panic thinking something is majorly wrong know I had just done a full brake job about 2 weeks earlier. The dealer is 5 min away so I close the shop up and head there. SM tries to give me the same sell. I first ask bluntly why the fuck they even pulled a pad to show her when she's in for an oil change. he comes bad with it's a standard check. Bullshit........ Then I let him know that I had done a full brake job on the car within the last few days and ask him to take me to the car so I can see what's going on...... He then is STILL on it and says he's seen many home brake jobs have issues........... I then FIRMLY let him know I've been doing this for 20+ years and that the pad he is holding saying it came from my wife's car is actually an Accord pad and my wife's car is a Fit.......... Dude still tries to back peddle and ask my last name. I tell him Creel........ he tries oh this is for Mrs Cribb............. I turn and openly in front of ALL the customers waiting call Mrs Cribb.......... anyone surprised there was no answer....... I never saw that service manager again...........

Dang, what a story luckystiff. Some shops prey on women, figuring they're most likely to agree to work. I once saw a woman in tears at a Goodyear service store, having been charged hundreds of dollars for work that should have been much less. I was waiting in line for a tire quote, but left after seeing these criminal creeps in action. I even heard a service rep at my local Honda dealer explain to a woman that the engine oil loss in her new Honda was due to "air bubbles working their way out".

On a positive note, I have a friend who owns a shop in an upscale area and has built a strong customer base taking extra special care of women customers, with honest treatment, full explanations and fair pricing. They tell their friends and he enjoys the business growth.

Years ago I sold auto parts.... Monthly, I would sell thousands of dollars in ball joints for Ford trucks, and thousands of dollars in tie rods for Chevy trucks. There were months were 50% of what we sold would be returned. This was months before the location went out of business. The location would have a receipt to show the customer the parts they purchased, but the parts would probably never go on. I confronted the location even though they were one of my largest customers and I got multiple excuses. 1. They claimed they ordered parts for all the vehicles on their alignment schedule so there would be no delay. #2. They claimed customers would not show for appointments. I let them know I was only five buildings away and they needed to get more accurate in their purchases.

I have sold hundreds of thousands of dollars in car parts to service centers and dealers. I have probably sold to over 200 different locations... I have come across less than 10 that I would trust to touch my own car.

Finally resolved my stereo issue I posted above. Dealership called me and apologized for the loss of the stereo. They offered me a $200 service credit to my account, so I accepted that.
