totally noob when it comes to iphones.... i remember reading someone posts about this..but can't find it. any help would be appreciated.


1. is jailbreaking and unlocking an iphone 3g 2 different things?

2. the iphone 3g that i have is version 4.0.1...is it possible to unlock and/or jailbreak it?

charlie would prob have more knowledge on this then me.. but...

1. unlocked means can be used with any carrier (tmobile, verison, etc) but not hacked into... phones cost $500+ if bought unlocked...

jailbroken is like rooting an android phone... bypassing the stock OS and running one that has no restrictions (free apps, can use flash, over/under clock the processor, etc) not considered illegal but frowned upon by the manufacturers... they basically void your warrenty... its like modding your car... u can turbo your fit, but then you cant bring it into a honda dealership under warrenty to fix your drivetrain if something goes wrong...

2. as long as "hackers" or programers are up to date, u can basically jailbreak any phone...(iphone4 had a swipe to jailbreak website!! it was THAT simple haha) to unlock it you prob have to go to the carrier, in this case an att store and ask about unlocking it....

so in order to get my iphone to work on tmobile, i need to get it unlocked and jailbroken (if i want to dl apps and what not)?

 

well if you want it to work on tmobile.. you have to get it unlocked...

i think most jailbroken phones still use att...

 

Yes its quite easy.

1. Backup your phone on iTunes
2. open Safari on your iphone and go to JailbreakMe
3. Slide the slider and it will Jailbreak your phone in just a couple of minutes. So easy!
4. Go to Cydia and make sure you download all the updates.
5. Search for ultrasn0w and that will unlock your phone. Now you can put in your t-mobile simcard and there you go. t-mobile on the iphone. (if for some reason you dont find ultrasn0w add the source ultrasn0w.com, instructions below)

Be aware though that you will encounter some issues with sending mms messages but just google that and you can easily find a solution. It has something to do with changing the carrier settings.

Also no 3G for t-mobile on the iphone so you will be stuck with EDGE.




Now to download apps. Go to Cydia then Manage then sources. Click on the edit button to add a source. Enter in Welcome to Cydia.hackulo.us!

Download AppSync which will enable you to sync cracked apps with iTunes.

Then download Installous which is where you will find practically any cracked app you are looking for.

That's my tutorial on jailbreaking and unlocking. Hope it helps.
