Best Canadian gas brand?

other than the cheapest gas being the best...

are any of you loyal gas brand ppl? know what's the best canadian gas around?

i heard petro can is dirty, detergents are bad for the car
shell is dirty
esso is ok
and sunoco is good for honda's ?

so far i've tried em all..

i'm gathering statistics and i'm not getting ~6-7 L/100km's that honda's spec sheets claim..

i'm getting about 8.5 L/100km for all the above, normal driving, 80% hwy, 20% city

discuss!

and to also add..

does any1 else thing that 'L/100km' is the most oddest unit u've ever seen...

what logical sense does it even make?

mpg makes sense...

why isn't it..

km/L?

It does seem backwards but I think it works well. If it was km/l your mileage would be 11.8km/litre Kinda harder to judge a longer distance trip I think. An odd number to work with... No? But at litres/100km it will be easier... *shrugs* Just throwing something out there...

I only use shell or sunoco.. I use Esso ($5-$10 only) if i am stuck with no gas and need to get the a shell or sunoco

on my first two tanks, doing all highway driving, i got 500km (that's like 5.8L / 100km)

now with mixed mode, 70% highway, 30% city, on 35L fillup, I am average-ing 7.8-8.0L / 100km (average speed of 125-130 on the highway and 60-70 in the city)

I use shell when I did these numbers.

but knowing that your mileage is say "11.8km/litre"

u just multiply that by 41 L tank size, and you'd know how many km's you can travel on one tank... thereby knowing how far you can get to somewhere

joe:

if you got ~500km on say a 41 L tank..

that'd be 8.20 L / 100 km correct?

500/100 = 5 "100 km"
41 L /5 "100 km" = 8.2 L/100km

am i doing my math wrong?

You need to know how many litres you consumed and distance travelled to get the L/100kms. Simply using the gank tank capacity is wrong.

BTW, with the gas light turned on and tanking up shortly after, the pump stops at about 33L in my Fit. If I’m patient, I can squeeze another 11-12L into my Fit.

So far I’ve driven 680km and 720km on 46L and 44L respectively on a trip down to Waterloo and back (120km/h AC on and some leg stretching since we were late).

46L / 680km * 100 = 6.76L/100kms
44L / 720km * 100 = 6.11L/100kms

I was happy considering my Fit had 2400kms by the time I got back, and it wasn’t driven very economically.

I've done 657km on 45L in town/city driving, or 6.85L/100kms.

i know its wrong, but i was just assuming a # coz joe said "on a tank"

but my own calculations are the same as yours so i'm good there..

haha woah, i never pushed it to the empty tank light before tho...

hmm by ur calc's then the 41 L tank has a reserve! thanks for settling that question, me not ever going to empty tank, i never knew if 41 included the reserve or not

the way i do the math is this:

1. fill up car until pump stops
2. reset trip meter
3. drive around for a week (or however long the gas lasts)
4. jog down the # of km's I did on the trip meter
5. fill up gas tank, jog down the # of litres used to get me back to full

take # of km (420km)
divide by 100 (4.2)
divide # of litres by result above (34L / 4.2)
= 8L/100km

mixed mode 70% hwy + 30% city

100% hwy = 6.2L/100km

that's exactly how i do it, and i include the 1 decimal place from the trip meter too =) haha

and sounds like my mixed mode (75% hwy, 25% city) avg around 8+L/100km
hwy ~ 120km/h
city ~ 80km/h

i made a spreadsheet for it and keep finding that i'm getting ~20% worst mileage than honda's claimed numbers, trying and documenting different gas brands, etc

i'm gonna try to drive conservatively and see what difference it makes..

i've noticed that A/C makes about a negligible ~5% diff in gas efficiency with corresponding gas brands

SillyPuddys method is the only way to get accurate results. You have to have a consistent amount of gas going in and you have to keep track of exactly how many km's you are travelling per tank. Best way is like he said, wait for the click and don't put any extra gas in. Try and use the same pump every time you go fill up at your favourite station. Reset your trip meter after you get into your car and repeat. I had to fill up mine today, it was hovering right near the "E". I got 485km and I filled up to 37L. Simple math:

37/4.85=7.63L/100km (rounded value). That is all city driving and the odd time near redline when I need the powerband to pass cars etc. but most of the time, just moderate driving shifting around 3~4k RPMs.

BTW all gas in Canada sucks! It's mainly dictated by the Octane that you are using. The higher the number, the better the chemical structure and less crap resulting in a better burn during combustion. However, lots of companies are using a lot of additives that claim to be better for your car. All of that stuff is crap, just look for the place that doesn't have any of that junk. I currently only fill up at CO-OP gas bars since I get an extra 3.5 cents back on groceries. As an alternative, if I'm not near my usual gas bar, I will hit up an Esso.

ya looks like i'm gonna stick to sunoco and esso, gotta try shell a few times too.. gotta ditch petro canada, i thought they were good being "____ canada" lol

right, i've been meaning to give my raw #'s everytime i was gonna post:

Brand L km L/100km
Petro Can 32.99 400.30 8.24 75% hwy 25% city 100% ac
Esso 31.10 397.70 7.82 80% hwy 20% city 10% ac
Sunoco 34.52 423.20 8.16 75% hwy 25% city 0% ac
Petro Can 20.94 250.20 8.37 80% hwy 20% city 100% ac

Those of you that stop pumping when the pump clicks for first time will be visiting the pump more frequently. According to the dealership and the owner's manual, you still have 60km range with the gas light on. So odds are it's above 80kms.

Each time my gas light comes on, I fill up. It stops at 32-33L, and I keep pumping, but at a much slower rate. That's how I'm getting over 44L into the tank + filler neck consistently. I'm also keeping a log of the fuel used, mileage and even the oil life %.

To date I have used Shell, Esso, Ultramar and Petro Canada. I haven't noticed any variance in my fuel range.

Using higher octane fuel isn't going to help you much. There's actually more energy in a lower octane gas, and it ignites with less effort.

Also, my Fit is manual, and from other threads, the automatics seem to be getting worse mileage than the manuals.
