anyone out there have the sticker fall off the top of your spoon shift knob or am i the only lucky one

 

mine hasnt fallen off. haha this is the second thread ive seen about spoon parts falling off. but i think you might be the only one on this problem.

 

mines been on a year with no issues.

 

looks like its time to bust out the super glue

 

i wouldnt use super glue on that piece. plastic and super glue dont get along.

anywho... I dont know what kinda plastic is on the knob or what the sticker (or do you mean adhesive backed plastic) is really made of... but if it is recessed enough I would put a dab of CA(superglues less brittle brother so to speak...more like model grade) or a rubbery type of epoxy, maybe even a rubbery cement type. I am mentioning things that have a bit of give as I would assume that it gets hot and cold alot as well as gets touched and slapped around a bit .

but try a test piece to see if indeed the glue you use will eat away the plastic.....
you will probably have to clean off whatever residue was left from the previous adhesive, whether it be a permanently uncured type or cured.
Some silicone adhesives are I believe ideal for such an application.

 

i dont know if this is considered a problem for the spoon knob, which i plan to get, but here goes, because its related to this knob.

is the spoon shift knob threaded in to fit like screw in? or is it adapter wise? i see pictures and such where there is a screw, so it looks like a adapter type knob.

if it is adapter type knob, then is it tight? ive have problems with those, and always prefer threaded in to fit.

it screws on, then there is a allen screw on the side that keeps it from screwing off. dont put the top sticker on until you put the knob on to make sure the sticker is straight.

 

haha why would your co workers murder me for saying that super glue makes plastics cloudy?? oh and the spoon shift knobs are made out of "duracon" which i think is just a fancy schmancy word for machine lathed plastic polymer. mine is made of this material but the spoon knobs are made from aluminum aswell, so we shouldnt assume his knob is "duracon"

Ahhh you didnt mention your preference as to why in the first post....
Me and my SFX model maker buddies swear by CA and the like. There are work arounds to the cloudy issue, usually cheaper CA's do this more but when not carefull it can happen anyway. CA's and plastics match really, really well, just some precautions need to be made if unsure of the base materials or when working on or near dark colored items or clear items.

I forgot that it was duracon...so probably the superglue will work better as duracon is a particular plastic that does not heat up or cool down easily (poor conductor) so it should put less strain on the glue. But I dont use duracon in my work so.... its all speculation, based on what I just happen to know about its properties.

 

dude, as an sfx model maker, you would have totally appreciated the stuff they have at lucas ranch over in the north bay. i went on a tour there a few years back and it was crazy! model scenes that were as big as a high school gym. sorry, way off topic.

 

I know it may be stupid, but you never know with some of the people I've encountered online. Did you really stick it down in the first place? Theres a chance that you didn't take off the backing and just set it in there

 

Is the adhesive like a tacky (uncured) glue on the back or like double sided thin foam tape ?(like servo tape).... I just be curious

I have not been there personally but some of my coworkers have and I know a bit about it (would be nice one day to check em out personaly If only I traveled)
There are some great places out here which is why I live here (other wise I bet it would be more lovely to live up there) I have been privaledged to work with and for a great many shops but I have to admit that
Stan Winstons was very impressive (impressive like... )place to check out on tour. (not particularly large...but uber high end...)

I remember it being the thin foil kind of tape if that makes sense

 

the plastic cap part of it seperated from the foil tape, oh and the super glue worked great

didnt fall of my shift knob, but it did fall off my rad cap. ... I used double sided tape.

 

aw, sorry to hear that. one of the nosepieces on one of my eyeglasses broke off. then i tried to superglue it back but kept messing up and now it's just a big mess. at least i only wear that pair of glasses at work so it's really ok despite it looking like a piece of trash now.
